N.C. State University, which has suffered major blows to its image in recent months from the scandal over its hiring former state First Lady Mary Easley and related resignations of its chancellor, provost and trustees' chairman, has filled the job that oversees its public relations efforts.
Joseph Hice, an administrator at the University of Florida in Gainesville, was named chief communications officer and associate vice chancellor of University Communications Wednesday.
The job had been vacant since January. It includes overseeing Creative Services, News Services and Web Communications.
Hice's salary will be $190,000, said an NCSU spokesman.
He is the associate vice president of public relations and marketing at the University of Florida. He also has experience in the corporate world, including stints as chief marketing officer for Segway, director of corporate communications for Harley-Davidson Motor Company and director of marketing communications for Bombardier Inc.'s Marine Products division.

Thu, 09/03/2009 - 01:01 — TeddyJackI know $190,000 is a lot, but this position requires a lot of responsibility. I'm not joking about this. I've been at a relatively low level involvment in marketing communications, web site development and public relations and have seen enough to know there is a WHOLE LOT of work to be done in these areas, and the results CAN result in financial benefits for an organization like NCSU that more than pay for the salary.
People don't have much of a problem professional ball players or TV personalities making a lot of money because we expect it. The idea is that those people sell tickets or toothpaste or whatever makes the cash flow into the organization. This is the kind of position that can do that.
That being said, the PR community is full of lots of people who don't know jack. If this guy knows his stuff, I have no problem with the salary. You have to pay that kind of money to get someone in this field who is competitive. That AIN'T going to happen if you offer $54K.
Just What NCSU and UNC system needs , A Propaganda Minister
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 20:41 — mike27513After all the articles about the bloated staff in the UNC system and their incredible salaries.
Lets Hire another PR Person!
"Hice's salary will be $190,000, said an NCSU spokesman"
Gee, I wonder if he's related to Gov. Bubbles Perdue
Erskine Bowles must have spit ....
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 18:06 — ebrent59....his Diet Coke all over the computer screen when he saw this. Same day the story runs in the N&O about his insisting on administrative cuts NCSU make this announcement. Someone at State is the university's own worst enemy (OWE).
Read the article before posting... try it sometime.
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 16:46 — Real_Americans_Thinkpatman, did you actually read the article - it is an existing position that has been vacant, not a new position. Amazing how people think they have a valid opinion when they don't even pay attention to basic facts.
I am not defending the $190K salary, but, again, if you actually read the article, this person is in charge of three organizational units of the university with unspecified number of staff and thus has a significant management role. Whether this is worth $190K salary, I don't know, but the other reality is don't hire high level administrator at salaries comparable to entry level positions elsewhere at the university. It's not an entry level position.

It is funny how Bowles says
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 16:09 — patmanIt is funny how Bowles says to cut 900 admin positions, and NCSU creates a new CxO job.
Indeed!

First PR task: Defend PR
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 15:59 — GetSeriousLooks like this guy has his work cut out for him. Step One: Defend a $190k salary in a state budget crisis. Step Two: Repeat Step One until everyone who took a wage cut or lost a state job puts their pitchforks away and goes home.

Amazed
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 15:45 — stevemichaelsI am first amazed at the salaries of this position and all the other "positions" that have come out at the university - its enough for an average wage earner like myself (60K) to be ill - I guess there is no shortage of funds at NCSU! Secondly, its just like an institution to hire someone to gloss over all their illegal and unethical dealings, its much easier than actually fixing the problem and removing (actually firing not transfer to another cushy job) all those involved. I guess they figure us the public will eventually forget and they can go back to these absurd salaries.
I am a tenure track faculty
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 16:15 — festusI am a tenure track faculty member at NCSU. I have been at NCSU for five years. My salary is $54k. My salary is exactly the same as other members of my department. So now you know: We do not make the big bucks. Your "average" salary sounds like a big, big raise to me.
I will never defend the outrageous salaries paid to Mary Easley (what a terrible joke) or to other administrators, who are paid far more than faculty and I do not see why. However, $190k for the top PR job at an institution with 28000 undergraduates and thousands of employees is not a high wage! Hey employees at SAS, or other big employers in the region, am I wrong?
PR Job
Thu, 09/03/2009 - 01:15 — snydermanI would feel better if NCSU added more auditors. You do not need PR, you need to start acting in an ethical manner and stop wasting MY tax dollars.
Poor guy, $54K for 9 months "work", excellent working conditions and benefits, and if the guild/union lets him in, he is set for life. What a cozy deal.
