Giuliani's Duke golf lawsuit dismissed

Bookmark and Share

A federal judge has shot down a claim by the son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani that Duke University breached a contract when it kicked him off the golf team.

Andrew Giuliani claimed in a July 2008 lawsuit that in cutting him from the team, Duke reneged on a contract that promised him golf team membership and a lifetime of access to Duke's "state-of-the-art" golf facilities.

U.S. District Court Judge William Osteen, Jr. wasn't buying it, writing that statements made by golf coaches during the recruiting process guaranteed Giuliani nothing more than a chance to compete for a spot on the team.

"The statement does not promise unconditional and unlimited opportunities to be on the golf team," Osteen wrote in dismissing Giuliani's claims.

“We are gratified the Court agreed that our coaches have the authority to dismiss a student-athlete from an intercollegiate sports team in circumstances such as those present in this case," said Michael Schoenfeld, a Duke spokesman.

Oh Andrew...

Grow up. It's time.

who?

did what?
and I care why?

I am a Duke alumna

and Duke was filled with spoiled self-important, whiny brats like Giuliani when I was there over 30 years ago. While I am grateful to have received a elitist education; mainly I learned to despise political correctness and the spawn of the ruling class. The citizens of Durham hated Dookies' and their snide attitudes so much in the 70's that even grocery shopping was a trial by fire. The serious and conscientious students who are striving for a superior education are ashamed to be lumped together with this pouting, smirking kid. I learned long ago that the most obnoxious students ( and the least academically qualified) were the offspring of someone important and influential. If a student's parents were "nobodies", then they were there on their own merits.

I wish

I had the family money or conections to get a Duke Education. I would work ona PhD in short order and contribute greatly to human knowledge without asking for anything other than my degree in return. People like this kid make me a bit irritated. Pee away every opertunity their parents give them and then sue with an atitude of entitlement. You don't see Bill Gates or Waren Buffet's kids acting this way. I find it curious he is a relative of Juliani.

Good Ruling!

It is spoiled, rich kids like this who give Duke students a bad name. It is a privilege to be given a scholarship that allows you to play golf and go to school for free. Now that you've blown that it is time to grow up and take advantage of the opportunies you've been given instead of thinking everyone owes you something.
