Michigan legislators staring down a budget deficit topping $1 billion are putting everything on the table, including a proposal to revoke every last dollar of the University of Michigan's $326 million state budget appropriation, thus effectively revoking its status as a publicly-funded institution.
As you might expect, this idea — number 4 on a list of budget cut proposals related to higher education in Michigan — has not been met with kind words. Plus, it would require a constitutional amendment.
