Former President Bill Clinton will be among those in Durham next week to pay homage to John Hope Franklin, the historian and civil rights pioneer who died in March.
Duke will host "A Celebration of the Lives of John Hope and Aurelia Whittington Franklin," on Thursday, June 11, to honor the late historian and his late wife, who were married on June 11, 1940.
Clinton, who in 1997 appointed John Hope Franklin to chair a national task force on race, will be one featured speaker. Franklin's longtime friend and vellow civil rights leader Vernon Jordan will speak as well.
There celebration will be at 11 a.m. at Duke Chapel. It is open to the public.
The event is being arranged by the Franklins’ son and daughter-in-law, John Whittington and Karen Roberts Franklin.
