The IMAX movie theater inside the Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh will close for a three-week renovation next week.
Marbles Director of Marketing Katy Hipp Burgwyn said the theater's final show will take place on Jan. 9. The projected reopening date is Feb.1.
The theater, which was originally built in 2001, will receive new seats, new carpeting, a new projection system and a new screen, she said. The theater's capacity will also increase slightly, from 268 to 272. The upgrades will allow the Marbles theater to show more films, as certain IMAX movies are filmed on a format that the current equipment is not capable of showing.
Hipp Burgwyn declined to say how much the renovation will cost but said the timing of the move made sense.
"Last year with 'Avatar,' it was just a knockout year," she said.
