So what's Chris Viehbacher, who quit as GlaxoSmithKline's top executive in Research Triangle Park earlier this year, up to these days?
Sounds like the same strategy of his former GSK counterparts: seeking acquisitions of promising vaccines, biotechnology drugs and other new medicines.
Viehbacher, who is now CEO of Paris-based Sanofi-Aventis, told Bloomberg News that "there will be more shopping on the horizon." Sanofi has already spent $9 billion this year buying health-care companies and products to boost revenue and bolster its pipeline of new products.
Vaccines are attractive because the market will double during the next five years, because the products aren’t readily reproduced by competitors and because of the investment required to build vaccine plants, Viehbacher told Bloomberg News. Sanofi in July announced it would purchase Shantha Biotechnics, the India-based maker of an experimental typhoid vaccine, and will keep looking for such acquisitions, he said.
He continues to look for smaller “bolt-on acquisitions” and isn’t seeking to merge with a pharmaceutical company of a size similar to Sanofi.
“People thought we had to do a large-sized acquisition,” Viehbacher said during an interview from Sanofi's New York offices. “I am not saying we wouldn’t, but it is highly unlikely.”
Viehbacher, 49, left GSK partly because he was passed over for the top spot when the British company named Andrew Witty as its CEO. Witty has made similar comments about wanting to buy smaller companies and new products, rather than merge with a major pharmaceutical rival.
Viehbacher's replacement as head of North American pharmaceuticals, Deirdre Connelly, said in a recent interview that GSK's new products will come from inside its own labs and from acquisitions.
