Raleigh police arrested an Employment Security Commission employee at the agency's central office on Monday.
Werner Joseph Matthews, 40, of Fuquay-Varina, has been charged with four counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.
Matthews illegally obtained more than $9,000 in federal tax return money from four different individuals, according to arrest warrants.
Matthews declined to comment on the charges other than to say they had nothing to do with his work for the ESC.
Matthews, an operations and systems analyst, has worked for the agency since September 2004.
The ESC released a statement today saying an employee was arrested Monday at the central office on charges unrelated to his work at the agency.
Matthews is a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal record that includes convictions for larceny, possession of cocaine and robbery.
He was also charged, but not convicted, of obtaining property by false pretenses in November.
