New Breed Logistics plans to shut down its distribution center in Clayton in early May, a move that will put 86 people out of work, according to documents filed with the state Department of Commerce.
New Breed, which is based in High Point, opened its Clayton facility in 2007 after winning a contract to provide warehousing and distribution services for Kansas City-based Hallmark Cards.
Hallmark also has distribution centers that it operates itself and has developed excess capacity in those centers due to a decline in its business, said Joe Hauck, vice president of sales, marketing and communications at New Breed.
Hallmark's decision to pull in-house the work previously done by New Breed also has forced New Breed to close a facility in St. Joseph, Mo., that also served Hallmark, said Hauck.
Hallmark initiated a restructuring last year and recently reported that its revenue declined 8 percent to $4 billion in 2009.
New Breed plans to close the plant on May 4. The privately held company has more than 50 distribution centers and employs more than 7,000 workers, according to its Web site. Its clients include Sony Electronics, Verizon Wireless, Procter & Gamble and Boeing.
