Scot Wingo has a reputation as one of the Triangle's more fun-loving CEOs, and he proved it again at the close of this year's Catalyst conference in Durham.
Catalyst, in its 10th year, brings together retail and tech professionals to discuss the best practices, innovations and strategies that retailers are using in the e-commerce world. It is hosted by Wingo's ChannelAdvisor, a RTP company that designs software that allows retailers to sell and market goods online.
At the conclusion of the final session today, the lights in the ballroom of the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club went dark and the video screens flickered on. What followed was a ChannelAdvisor spoof of this year's popular Super Bowl ad touting Detroit and featuring Eminem.
The ChannelAdvisor version featured Wingo, driving his own Lexus SUV, around the Triangle. A voice over asks: "What does a company from this city know about e-commerce? What does a CEO who collects Star Wars figurines know about retail?.... Yeah, we're from Tobacco Road, but this certainly isn't a start-up."
In the conclusion of the spoof -- complete with hoodie-wearing Wingo climbing up on stage in front of a chior -- Wingo pints directly into the camera and says, "This is ChannelAdvisor, and this is what we do."
Despite a request from .biz, Wingo declined to release the ad for public consumption. But we did drag this photo out of the archives. This is from Halloween 2009, when Wingo went to the office wearing a convict costume. To this day, he promises us it was just a costume.
