Bull's Eye

The Durham staff of The News & Observer works the Bull City to dig up the news and tell its stories. Read here about insider stuff that fills their notebooks but doesn't always make the paper.

What can you find by the side of the road?

Talk about an incentive.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is asking churches, schools, businesses and other groups to take to the streets from Sept. 20 to Oct. 4 to clean up trash. But don't join Litter Sweep for the good-natured volunteerism alone.

Because the person with the most unusual road-side trash find could win $250! (This reminds me of a package Matthew Eisley did in 2006 about N.C.'s trashy roadways.)

Here's what to do:

  • Organize a volunteer group.
  • Choose a state road (one in your neighborhood, on your commute, etc.)
  • Contact Susan Cox with the NCDOT in Durham at (919) 477-2814 to reserve your cleaning supplies (safety vests, orange bags for trash and blue bags for recyclables). Designate a person to pick up your cleaning supplies.

After your cleanup:

  • Leave your orange bags on the roadside.
  • Call Susan Cox again (919) 477-2814) and tell her the number of bags and their exact location
  • Take your blue bags of recyclables to a local recycling  drop off center.
  • Keep an eye out for "unusual litter." Take a picture of it and then enter the “Unusual Litter”  contest to win up to $250.

After the cleanup, participants may visit this Web site to request certificates of appreciation from NCDOT.

For more information about Litter Sweep participation, call the Litter Sweep Hotline at 1-800-331-5864 or visit the Web site.

To report illegal dumping and littering in Durham County contact the Durham County General Services Department’s Litter Control Officer at (919) 560-0437.

Neat

I think that this is a neat idea. It will encourage people to clean up their streets. All anyone has to do these days is tell someone that they will get a cash prize.
