Stimulus project closing Freeway lanes

Bookmark and Share

NCDOT is closing southbound lanes of the Durham Freeway, between Swift Avenue and Briggs Avenue, this weekend highway reconstruction.

All lanes will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday and again Saturday night and Sunday morning. The left lane between Fayetteville Street and Briggs is closing all day Saturday, and from Fayetteville to Swift on Sunday.

Friday-night's detour begins at the Fayetteville Road exit (Exit 12), goes onto Morehead Avenue to Fayetteville Street, left to Pettigrew and Pettigrew to Briggs. Saturday night's takes the Swift Avenue exit (Exit 14), right onto Swift across Campus Drive to Duke University Road, left to Vickers Avenue and back onto the Freeway.

According to DOT, the $4.2 million federal stimulus project calls for diamond grinding the road surface, replacing concrete pavement slabs and asphalt shoulder reconstruction to create a smoother surface. Project completion is expected by Nov. 1.
