PA comes out for prepared-food tax, Obama

Bookmark and Share

The Durham People’s Alliance has endorsed Durham County’s proposed 1 percent prepared-food tax, along with a full slate of candidates in the Nov. 4 general election.

According to a news release from the group, the tax endorsement came after “a well-informed and spirited debate” on its effect on private citizens and local government budgets.

Most of the tax receipts would come from restaurant meals. By law, the revenue may only be used for recreational and cultural facilities, marketing, beautification and workforce training.

The People’s Alliance also re-endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, and voted to support Democrats Bev Perdue for governor, Kay Hagan for U.S. Senate, David Price for Congress and Bob Atwater, Floyd McKissick, Larry Hall, Paul Luebke and H.M. Wake up Durham, Support the Prepared Food Tax

Wake up Durham!

While Raleigh enjoys the benefits of a Prepared Food Tax (PFT), and have for many years, Raleigh residents and a national organization are attempting to buy this election with at least $50,000.  If the PFT fails all Durham residents will be forced to pay higher property taxes.  That is not just homeowners; it is renters as well, because the property owner will pass on the increased taxes to the renters (at least).  Why don’t they care?  They don’t live here.

The “no Food Tax” folks don’t reveal who is funding their efforts, and call cash expenditures “in-kind contributions. “  They have engaged in a steal the yard sign campaign.  That is not playing by the rules.

They are less than honest about portraying the PFT as being levied on groceries.  Not so!  In fact, that distortion is why they call their campaign “No Food Tax.”  They have claimed that the PFT is regressive, when the data show that low income citizens do not patronize expensive restaurants, and so pay less than people with high incomes.  They oppose the tax in Durham, while willingly paying it in Raleigh.  In fact, the Raleigh PFT was supported by the Restaurant Association since they knew that, their customers pay it and the amenities funded by the PFT would generate sales.

They call their anti PFT campaign Durham Citizens against the “food Tax”, when  the campaign is based in Raleigh and funded nationally.

Thirty one Durham organizations have thoughtfully reviewed the PFT issue and have endorsed it.  Don’t let out-of-state interests, ride around the community like pigs while they buy political endorsements and try to take away this election.

Durham deserves better.
