Is a lower drinking age a bad idea?

Last week, we reported on a  push by college presidents, including Duke President Richard Brodhead, to get a national discourse going on lowering the drinking age in an attempt to combat binge drinking.

Here's an interesting column from someone who doesn't think it's such a good idea.

If you can die for your country at 18, vote at 18, get married at 18 without parents consent, then you should be able to drink at 18.

Yes, you can die for your country at 18, vote at 18, get married at 18 but all these acts have direct consequences on you only. When you drink, your head is spinning, you feel "good" and you decide to drive (for instance), are responsible for more lives than yours. We can't compare drinking with getting married...
