Going to the show --- WHERE?

Bookmark and Share

Durham's recreation deparment is taking a group of "mature adults" to see the Theatre in the Park production of "A Christmas Carol."

Sounds great. The show's been a December institution for decades, and for the first time this year it's touring to Durham — playing this weekend in the brand-new Performing Arts Center.

Oh.

The City of Durham is taking the old folks to see the show week after next in Raleigh.

And, the announcement says, "We will have an enjoyable dinner before the show at Mayflower Seafood Restaurant!" in the capital city.

What was that about great things happening in ... ?

DPR's Trip to "A Christmas Carol"

Durham Parks and Recreation appreciates your interest in our programs and services and would like to respond the recent postings about our decision to take the mature adults in Durham on a trip to Raleigh to see “A Christmas Carol”. Please allow me to offer an explanation as to why such a trip was planned.

DPR established a mature adults council made up of citizens 55 or better to advise staff on programming opportunities. Surveys and evaluations provided by mature adult program participants indicated that out of town and local trips are something that they would like to do.

DPR utilizes these types of trips so that mature adults can experience recreational opportunities that may not otherwise be possible due to their reduced ability to drive and lack of other resources.

We take various out of town trips to regional destinations from as close as Pittsboro to as far as Asheville.

This trip was planned 16 months ago and tickets were purchased seven months ago. DPR staff checked the DPAC website and at that time “A Christmas Carol” was not on their schedule – just the Broadway shows. We do have plans at this time to attend at least two shows in 2009 at the DPAC– (January and May).

Initially, mature adult trips offered by DPR were partially subsidized in an effort to gain interest. Currently, trips are planned to achieve maximum participation which will result in 100% cost recovery. When these planned trips “sell out”, this full recovery is achieved which to date has been 90% of the time. The participants will pay for their own dinner.

Raleigh <--> Durham

If it makes you feel any better, my Raleigh residing family is so excited about the DPAC that we are traveling to Durham to see show!
