Council votes to accept golf course

Bookmark and Share

DURHAM It's almost official – the city of Durham is getting itself a golf course.

At tonight's City Council meeting, members voted to accept SunTrust Bank's gift of the Hillandale Golf Course. A few signatures are all that's left to close the deal.

Council approval included an amendment to the formal proposal SunTrust submitted in October. The amendment makes explicit some points that protect the city from financial liability.

Specifically, the amendment states:

  • The city owes the course manager no payment, and is not responsible for any costs of course operation, maintenance, repair or improvement;
  • The city shall appoint an advisory board for the course;
  • The course manager is responsible for securing insurance.

SunTrust has yet to accept the amendment, but the amendment clarifies elements in the bank's proposal.
