Commissioners want progress report on homeless plan

County Commissioners have put off contract approval for the 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness in Durham, pending a report on what has been accomplished in the 3.5 years since the county and city adopted the plan.

“I have no clue where it is,” Commissioner Brenda Howerton said.

Under the contract, Durham County and the City of Durham appoint the Durham Affordable Housing Coalition as lead agency for carrying the plan out. Although the $67,000 contract has not been approved, the DAHC had acted as lead agency since the beginning of the current fiscal year.

Contract approval was on the county board's consent agenda tonight, but Commissioner Ellen Reckhow pulled the item for disucssion.

“We had an excellent blueprint” in the plan, said Commissioner Ellen Reckhow, “but I don’t know that we’re getting the results that we deserve.”

County Manager Mike Ruffin said that the DAHC has undergone personnel turnover in the past year, but has taken measures to advance the plan. How effective those measures will prove, he said, “The jury is still out.”

Commissioners Chairman Michael Page, a member of the plan’s executive committee, said, “Some strides are being made.

“We probably have not seen this move the way we’d like,” Page said, “but  … I do see progress currently being made.”

DAHC will be asked to make a report at the commissioners’ February work session. Contract approval could be made at that time.

Homeless problem

The homeless problem will NEVER be solved by government. When will you understand that? In many ways, government is the barrier that keeps millions from GETTING JOBS!!! Obama WANTS EVERYONE GOVERNMENT DEPENDENT so his Marxist agenda will succeed (for a short time only)!
