Clement closes case on sex shop

Durham city councilman Howard Clement has suspended his effort to arrange a meeting between owners of an Adam & Eve sex-wares store and displeased neighbors.

Clement said Thursday he had talked with co-owner Marcus Goswick, and “He was not interested.

“He said it was a lose-lose situation for him to meet.”

The store has generated opposition since word came out that it was to open in a new shopping center on Fayetteville Road at N.C. 54. A petition against it has collected 1,352 signatures.

Signatures include those of Harvey Wallbanger, Ferris Buehler, “From Chicago,” Lucy and Linus Van Pelt, Minnie and Mickey Mouse.

Durham resident Joe Mayer has also deluged city officials with emails claiming the store violates the city ordinances regulating “adult establishments.”

The city, including City Attorney Patrick Baker, have concluded that the store is entitled to open.

“Mr. Baker, in my opinion, demonstrated that we knew what we were talking about,” Clement said.

“We were at loggerheads,” he said, “So I decided I would rest my case.”
