Watching the weather in the Gulf of Mexico, City Manager Tom Bonfield wants Durham residents to conserve their gasoline and put the city on notice, as well.
If supplies get low in the wake of Hurricane Ike, Durham police cars, fire trucks and garbage trucks get first dibs on the gas available in city tanks, according to a Friday release from City Hall. Few other municipal vehicles will get to line up at the pumps.
"Be prepared," Bonfield said.
Along that line, the city's automotive machinery has been divided into non-essential, essential and critical categories, with fuel restricted accordingly if circumstances warrant.
