Another opponent for McKissick

Bookmark and Share

Durham will have a three-way race for state Senate this fall.

Libertarian David C. Rollins has joined Republican Kenneth R. Chandler in challenging Democratic incumbent Floyd B. McKissick Jr. for the District 20 seat, which represents most of Durham County.

David RollinsAccording to his campaign biography, Rollins is employed by Credit Suisse and presently on temporary assignment in Switzerland. He is a 1991 Duke University graduate, and returned to Durham in 2005 to open Credit Suisse's office in the Research Triangle Park.

His platform says that he is primarily interested in using tax incentives to help the poor, and is concerned with urban sprawl and inner-city gentrification. He favors school vouchers and charter schools, and curtailing the annexation powers of North Carolina cities.

do you proofread for grammar

or can you not spell "poor"

To help the door? Shame on

To help the door? Shame on whomever proof-reads for your newspaper!! A Libertarian?

An old schoolteacher

a left-leaning libertarian?

I know David from his work at UMD and Food Bank of NC. He is opposed to the meals tax and is angling for the endorsement of the PA. I think he's getting some campaign money from a prominent liberal and one of the fast food franchise owners in Durham, though his first financial report hasn't been filed yet.

McKissick has got to go -- even the durham committee is getting sick of him. Haven't seen any campaign materials from Chandler yet.

Rollins' candidacy is good news

As a 10-year Durham resident, I'm glad to see David Rollins running for State Senate. I know David, because for about two years he shared with me the task of driving the three boys I mentored to Scouts each week. (When I asked for a volunteer on the Trinity Park listserv, David piped up. I was unwilling to give the task to a stranger, but he lobbied for the job. "I want to do it - I was an Eagle Scout!" he said.) Floyd McKissick certainly has a record in Durham, but every incumbent needs a challenger. And a city as diverse and open-minded as Durham deserves the representation of a third party -- and maybe even a fourth and a fifth. Come to think of it -- let's have a party!
