Anita Daniels joins Durham commissioner field

Social worker Anita Antoinette Daniels filed Thursday for a seat on Durham's Board of County Commissioners.

Daniels, who applied unsuccessfully to fill the unexpired term of retired Commissioner Becky Heron, is the fifth candidate to official enter the race. All five candidates who have filed so far for the partisan election are Democrats.

A sixth candidate, neighborhood organizer Steve Hopkins, announced his candidacy via Facebook on Wednesday, but has yet to file at the Board of Elections.

No Durham candidate has yet filed for state House District 50, covering northern Durham and much of Orange County. Democrat Valerie Jean Paige Foushee of Chapel Hill and Republicans Walter Lewis Hannah of Efland and Rodney Lester Chaney of Hillsborough are in the running for that seat.

The partisan primary election is May 8.
