High schools adopt helmet rule

High school football players who lose their helmets during play in the 2012 high school season must leave the field for one play according to a rule change adopted by the National Federation of State High School Association Football Rules Committee.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association was one of the first groups in the country to study how frequently helmets came off during play. The NCHSAA had its game officials track every helmet that came off during play for the 2011 season.

“I’m thrilled and ecstatic,” said Mark Drebelbis, an assistant commissioner of the NCHSAA. “We were very much in the forefront in pushing for this rule change. We had the data to show that helmets were coming off way to frequently.

“One of the most important aspects of concussion prevention is a properly fitted helmet. This is a great rule change and will help us get properly fitted helmets on our players.”

In cases where the helmet comes completely off without it being directly attributable to a foul by the opponent, the player will have to leave the game for at least one down. If an opposing player jerks an opposing players’ helmet off, it is a penalty.

Three Johnston County schools to host dual wrestling playoff pods

Three Johnston County high schools will host first and second round pods Tuesday as the NCHSAA dual team wrestling playoffs begin. Northern Carolina 2A Conference champion Corinth Holders, North Johnston and Clayton will all serve as host schools.
Both the first and second round matches are held on Tuesday night with one team emerging from each four-team site.
West Johnston and Cleveland will both be on the road on Tuesday.
In the 4A playoffs, West Johnston (20-4) heads to the Fayetteville Jack Britt pod to meet the Buccaneers (18-3). Sanderson (20-3) meets Hoke County (19-6) in the other first-round match at Britt.
In another 4A pod at Clayton, the Comets (11-8) will meet New Bern (18-2). Durham Jordan (22-8) challenges Millbrook (18-5) in the other first-round dual at Clayton.
Cleveland, which won the Eastern Carolina 3A Conference dual team title, is at West Carteret. The Rams (23-9) take on Chapel Hill (22-11) in their opener, while host West Carteret (17-7) meets Currituck (13-7).
The 2A duals have Corinth Holders (29-6) taking on Providence Grove (16-17) in its opener, with the winner meeting the victor between Croatan (14-1) and Roanoke Rapids (14-14) in the second round.
North Johnston, the Northern Carolina 2A Conference runner-up, takes on Northwood (12-13). North Brunswick (6-8) takes on Swansboro (19-14) in the other match at North.
First round matches at all sites begin at 6 p.m. with the second round matches following about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.

Mock-up of how basketball seeds could look

If you haven't read this blog on how the NCHSAA basketball playoffs will be seeded, do so now and come back here. You read it yet? Opened the excel spreadsheet? Good.

Now let's take some time to visualize what this year's boys and girls basketball playoffs would look like under these changes.

Due to time constraints -- and the greater accessibility to 4A conference standings and records -- I put together a mock-up of the 4A East and Mideast seeds for boys and girls basketball playoffs.

This isn't a projection. It's just to give you a visual idea of what the basketball playoffs could look like in a few weeks.

The seeds are done in an if-the-season-were-to-end-today fashion.

As a byproduct of the pod, it looks like all area conference champions will be able to host at least two rounds until regionals begin in the fourth round. In the past, conference champs have had to play on the road as early as the second round -- against another conference champion.

I've underlined where the seeds change from 1s to 2s, 2s to 3s, etc. For instance, in the 4A girls Mideast, there are four 1-seeds, three 2-seeds, five 3-seeds, three 4-seeds, no 5-seeds and one wild-card (wild-cards are denoted by **).

NOTE: In the girls Mideast, Southern Alamance making the playoffs bumps Richmond County to the Midwest. In the boys Mideast, Southeast Guilford does the same thing to Richmond's boys.

4A GIRLS MIDEAST

Hope Mills South View

Green Hope

Hillside

Panther Creek, Green Hope make realignment requests

Green Hope and Panther Creek made requests to the N.C. High School Athletic Associaton on Tuesday to place the schools in a league with other current Tri-Nine 4A schools.

The current drafts of conference realignment has the two Wake County schools joining Durham Jordan, Durham Riverside, Durham Hillside, Roxboro Person and Northern Durham in a conference.

Todd Schuler, the Panther Creek athletics director, said the move would create a financial hardship for the schools to leave the rivalries they have in their current league. He noted there are four high schools in Cary – the other two are Middle Creek and Cary – and that pulling Green Hope and Panther Creek would not only affect gate receipts and corporate sponsorships, but also increase travel.

He said the current Tri-Nine teams have a shared community.

Bob Hill, the athletic director at Durham Hillside, represented the PAC-6 schools.

He noted a five-team conference would create major difficulties.

In 2011, for example, Hillside played only 10 football games because it could not find opponents. One of the 10 was against a team from South Carolina.

“We have good facilities and we have good competitive teams,” he said. “We’ve had sellouts in basketball and football. I think we could develop new rivalries.”

Broughton asked to remain in the current Cap Eight instead of moving to the Greater Neuse River Conference. Jack Spain, the Caps’ athletics director, suggested a new school opening in 2013 in Rolesville, be placed in the Greater Neuse and that Broughton remain with its traditional rivals.

Postseason basketball qualifying methods stay the same

The N.C. High School Athletic Association clarified at least one part of its new playoff format for the boys and girls basketball playoffs.

While the NCHSAA is switching from its old playoff structure (where each team had an assigned first-round match-up) to one much like how the NCHSAA football brackets are decided (where teams are seeded 1-16 and grouped by geography) it will not be changing how teams qualify for the playoffs.

Associate commissioner Rick Strunk wrote in a email response: "The qualification will be the same as in the past using the formula of half number teams in conference plus one. We will also select the wild-cards if necessary. After the 64 qualifiers are set, we will begin the seeding process. We are not yet ready to release the final details, but those are forthcoming."

That means leagues like the Cap-8, Tri-Nine and Greater Neuse River Conference still have five automatic berths in the postseason.

Leagues with seven or fewer teams, like the PAC-6, Eastern Carolina and Carolina 3A, still have four automatic berths. A team can clinch a spot in the NCHSAA postseason by winning its conference tournament, no matter its regular-season finish in the league (Lee County's boys did this last year in the Tri-Nine Conference after a 6th-place finish).

There had been some confusion on just how far the NCHSAA was going to make its basketball postseason like football, where only the three teams of each league get automatic bids and all others are seeded as wild-cards.

Strunk's clarifying email today means we can continue to follow the developing fight for final playoff spots in each conference.

Carolina Mudcats to host Cleveland Indians at Five County Stadium on April 3

The Carolina Mudcats and Cleveland Indians will begin their relationship in opposite dugouts this April.

The Mudcats announced Wednesday that they will host the Indians on April 3 at Five County Stadium in what will be the Triangle area’s introduction to the team that will supply the Zebulon-based franchise with minor league talent.

“Cleveland wanted to show their appreciation to the Triangle area and they offered to put on an exhibition game,” said Mudcats owner Steve Bryant. “I think it’s going to be a great way to introduce the era of the Cleveland Indians to Mudcats’ fans.”

It will be the seventh time Five County Stadium has hosted a MLB team for an exhibition. The Pirates (1992, 1994, 1996), Mariners (1997), Marlins (2003) and Reds (2005) have played the Mudcats previously.

After selling his interest in the Double-A franchise that was located at Five County Stadium last year, Bryant purchased the rights to the high Class-A team in Kinston, which he moved to Five County Stadium and bring Carolina League baseball back to the Triangle.

The Indians’ player development agreement with the franchise was set to end after the upcoming season, but the Mudcats and Indians agreed to a two-year extension through the 2014 season.

“This will be an incredible addition to the Cleveland Indians’ player development system as we are adding a Triple-A caliber ballpark and facility while remaining in what we feel is one of the best developmental leagues in professional baseball,” said Indians vice president for player development Ross Atkins, a North Carolina native. “We expect this to be the beginning of a very long and productive relationship.”

Tickets to the game, which will feature a 2 p.m., went on sale today. And Bryant said anyone who buys a ticket to the game will receive a free ticket to Carolina’s Carolina League opener on April 6 against Winston-Salem.

Southeast Ralegh standout quarterback to announce college decision Tuesday

Southeast Raleigh High School standout senior quarterback David Washington told N&O correspondent Mike Potter Friday night that he will announce his college decision at Tuesday night's basketball game against Garner.

Washington said he will choose between Old Dominion, Richmond and Charlotte.

The 6-foot-4 quarterback was named the Greater Neuse River 4A Conference's player of the year this past season, throwing for more than 2,600 yards and rushing for nearly 1,200.

Michael Dean Chadwick joins the Rangers

Michael Dean Chadwick, Josh Hamilton's father-in-law, has been named as a special assistant by the Texas Rangers.

Chadwick is expected to travel with the team and be an accountability partner to Hamilton. When the Rangers acquired Hamilton four years ago, the club brought in Johnny Narron to be Hamilton's accountability partner. Narron has accepted a position as Milwaukee's hitting coach for the 2012 season.

Hamilton battled alcohol and drug addiction when he was younger and was completely out of baseball for several years.

“When we traded for Josh, we felt that Johnny was a key hire and it turns out he was,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told reporters. “There was a little bit more unknown when he was traded. He had never played here before, never been on the stage in the same regard. We look at this more as it’s a support system more than a necessity. ... Josh is in a very different position today than he was when we acquired him, both personally and professionally.”

Chadwick has been CEO of his home-building and development company in Apex and is the head of the nonprofit Mike Chadwick Ministries. He often speaks in churches and to athletic groups about his Christian faith and the story of his own substance abuse issues he had earlier in life.
