Carolina Mudcats' first baseman Yonder Alonso has been placed on the seven-day disabled list with a broken hamate bone in his right hand, the team announced this afternoon. Alonso suffered the injury taking a swing on a 3-0 fastball in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader against Tennessee. Alonso will be further assessed in the coming few days to determine the course of action for healing and rehabilitation. There has been no timetable set for Alonso's return as of yet.
Alonso was the Reds' first round pick (No. 8 overall) in last year's draft, and entered the season as Cincinnati's top-ranked prospect by Baseball America. He left the Florida State League leading the circuit in RBI while hitting .302 with seven home runs. In his time with the Mudcats, Alonso was hitting .246 with one homer and eight RBI, although his numbers didn't adequately reflect how well he was hitting the ball.
To replace Alonso on the active roster, outfielder Denis Phipps has been assigned to Carolina from High-A Sarasota and will be in uniform tonight for Carolina.
