Rain costs Benson Post 109 a great start

Bookmark and Share

From correspondent Jay Mumford:

Wednesday night's American Legion senior baseball game between Are One, Western Division rivals Benson Post 109 and Garner Post 232 was called in the bottom of the fourth inning due to rain, which made the Bruce Coats field diamond unplayable.

Benson led, 6-2, but Garner had runners on first and second with no one out when the storm chased the teams off the field.

To the disappointment of Post 109 and coach Earl Stephenson, the game, which will be made up June 26, will start anew as five innings were not completed, washing away all of Wednesday's statistics, including 2-for-2 nights at the plate by Benson's Preston Major and Chris Sanders and a 2-for-3 effort by Michael Johnson.

About the blogger

D. Clay Best has served as the sports editor of The Herald since 1997 and has covered high school sports since 1992. He's gone through many neighborhoods of NFL-fandom including the Cowboys, Raiders and Patriots and is in limbo right now. If that's not enough to require therapy, he also has way too much brain space filled with useless info on the legendary '80s TV series "Miami Vice."
