North Johnston High School graduate Willie Smith is officially a Washington Redskin. Smith, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive tackle made the Redskins' final roster cut on Saturday, earning a spot on the team's active 53-man roster.
Smith was an undrafted free agent, signed in early August by the Redskins, after playing four seasons at ECU.
He started his ECU career as a defensive tackle, then moved to tight end on offense and finally offensive tackle for his last two seasons with the Pirates. He started the final 25-plus games of his career at right tackle for the Pirates.
The Redskins open the 2011 NFL season next Sunday at 4:15 when they host the New York Giants. The game will not be broadcast locally, since the Carolina Panthers also kick off at 4:15 next week.
