Bookmark and Share

North Johnston High School graduate Willie Smith is officially a Washington Redskin. Smith, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive tackle made the Redskins' final roster cut on Saturday, earning a spot on the team's active 53-man roster.

Smith was an undrafted free agent, signed in early August by the Redskins, after playing four seasons at ECU.

He started his ECU career as a defensive tackle, then moved to tight end on offense and finally offensive tackle for his last two seasons with the Pirates. He started the final 25-plus games of his career at right tackle for the Pirates.

The Redskins open the 2011 NFL season next Sunday at 4:15 when they host the New York Giants. The game will not be broadcast locally, since the Carolina Panthers also kick off at 4:15 next week.

About the blogger

D. Clay Best has served as the sports editor of The Herald since 1997 and has covered high school sports since 1992. He's gone through many neighborhoods of NFL-fandom including the Cowboys, Raiders and Patriots and is in limbo right now. If that's not enough to require therapy, he also has way too much brain space filled with useless info on the legendary '80s TV series "Miami Vice."
