North Johnston names N.C. State student its new wrestling coach

Bookmark and Share

N.C. State University student Josh Langholtz is the new head wrestling coach at North Johnston High School. Langholtz takes over a Panthers’ program which has had a decent amount of success for a young program.
Langholtz, a senior who is finishing up his degree work in biological sciences, became a state championship level wrestler by the time his career at Jacksonville High School ended. He was 50-4 as a senior, finishing second in the state in the 3A 135-pound classification.
“One of the most important things I need to do is get kids out and involved in wrestling,” Langholtz said of his goals for the North program. “That’ll mean getting a feeder program started at the middle school, which is one of our goals. If you stick with it, you’re going to have success as a junior or senior, if you haven’t had success as a younger wrestler.
“We just have to find kids who keep coming back every year and being committed to wrestling.”
North will offer open mat workouts for prospects with a  current physical form on file Thursday of this week and every day next week. Official tryouts begin on Oct. 31.
We’ll have more on Langholtz as the wrestling season nears in a future edition of The Smithfield Herald.

About the blogger

D. Clay Best has served as the sports editor of The Herald since 1997 and has covered high school sports since 1992. He's gone through many neighborhoods of NFL-fandom including the Cowboys, Raiders and Patriots and is in limbo right now. If that's not enough to require therapy, he also has way too much brain space filled with useless info on the legendary '80s TV series "Miami Vice."
