2012 Garner High Athletics Hall of Fame class announced, N&O's Tim Stevens included

The second Garner High School Athletic Hall of Fame class has been announced. The class includes former NFL player Eric Williams ('78), three-sport standout (basketball, softball volleyball) Laurie Bailey ('79), coach Sherrill Johnson (posthumously),  longtime volunteer Billy Stuart and News Observer preps editor Tim Stevens ('70).

The 2012 Garner High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held May 3 at Anfesa's Ballroom. Tickets will be available at the high school.

2012 Johnston County Athletic Hall of Fame selections announced

The 2012 Johnston County Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2012 has been announced. Being inducted into the class on Saturday, April 28, at Smithfield-Selma High School are Rickie Boyette of Princeton, Steve Coats of Cleveland, Art Medlin of South Johnston, Phil Pittman of North Johnston, Paul Sanderford of Corinth Holders, Raymond Massey Sugg of Princeton, the late Elbert Moye of Smithfield-Selma and the late Reginald Poole of Clayton.

Tickets to the Hall of Fame banquet at Smithfield-Selma High are 10 per person and can be purchased at any Johnston County high school.

Southern National rained out again, Egg drop set for Saturday

Inclement weather continued to be the dominant force in March at Southern National Motorsports Park, forcing the cancellation of Saturday's racing program.

The Southeastern Limited Late Models, scheduled to appear at the high-banked, 0.4-mile asphalt facility, will be rescheduled for a later date.

Racing will resume at Southern National on Saturday with the first evening racing program of the season, featuring twin 75-lap features in the Late Model Stock Class, with features also scheduled in Legends, Bandoleros, UCARS, Challengers and Mini Modifieds.

Prior to the evening's program, with the initial green flag slated to fall at 7 p.m., will be an Easter Egg drop for the youth, with approximately 12.000 eggs to fall on the left side lot in front of the facility at 3.

Eastern Shrine Bowl Combine to be held Saturday at South Johnston High

The 2012 eastern Shrine Bowl Combine will be held Saturday at South Johnston High School for rising seniors. The cost is $20 per athlete. Athletes can register at 9:30 a.m. kickers, punters and long snappers and 10 o'clock for position players.

Neuse Charter names Jimmie Sanders as boys varsity basketball coach

Jimmie Sanders has been named Neuse Charter School's varsity basketball coach. The Michigan State graduate also serves a program director for the Cleveland Pride basketball club.

South Johnston High sets annual Military Appreciation Day games for March 23

The South Johnston High School athletic department will hold its annual Military Appreciation Day on Friday, March 23.
South Johnston honor all service men and women at their home games against Cleveland High School.  Active duty and retired military personnel will get free admission to the baseball, soccer, and softball games that day at South Johnston.
Junior varsity games in baseball and softball begin at 4. Varsity action in both of those games begins at 6.
The girls soccer match also begins at 6 p.m.
