It was a big Saturday of action on the college football scene for former Johnston County standouts. A look around at who did what in their debuts...

Former Smithfield-Selma and South Johnston running back Josh Snead scored his first career collegiate touchdown in his first appearance for Duke University on Saturday. Snead scored on an 3-yard run in the Blue Devils' 41-27 victory over Elon. Snead carried the ball seven times, gaining 29 yards on the night. His longest run was eight yards.

Former Smithfield-Selma standout Lee Stanley led Campbell's defense with 13 tackles in a 20-16 victory over UVA Wise on Saturday in Buies Creek. Stanley is a redshirt senior captain for the Camels. Campbell's roster also includes local former standouts Tyler Dean and Sam Eberwein of Clayton, Alex Green and Andy Johnson of SSS and Cohen Ruffin of West Johnston.

About the blogger

D. Clay Best has served as the sports editor of The Herald since 1997 and has covered high school sports since 1992. He's gone through many neighborhoods of NFL-fandom including the Cowboys, Raiders and Patriots and is in limbo right now. If that's not enough to require therapy, he also has way too much brain space filled with useless info on the legendary '80s TV series "Miami Vice."
