Super Tuesday in the presidential election is behind us, but today brings another kind of super Tuesday in the world of high school sports. Conference play in baseball and softball for the Northern Carolina 2A, Eastern Carolina 3A and Greater Neuse River 4A all begin today and there are solid match ups all around.
In the GNRC, the highlight game on the baseball side is a meeting of undefeated squads as Smithfield-Selma hosts West Johnston at 7 p.m. SSS is 6-0, but the Wildcats will be the toughest test the Spartans have faced yet. Meanwhile, just a few miles up Highway 70, Clayton hosts Garner in a matchup of another pair of teams expected to be in a wide open league pennant race.
The GNRC softball slate brings us a rematch of a third round game in the state playoffs with Garner at Clayton. The Trojans finished higher during the regular-season, winning a 12-inning game at Clayton last year, before falling to Clayton in the state playoffs.
The Comets went onto reach the state Final Four.
The Eastern Carolina 3A Conference softball slate opens with a pair of traditional powers meeting as South Johnston travels to C.B. Aycock for a 6 p.m. contest. Cleveland is at Southern Wayne in softball in an early key road test for the Rams.
Those four teams face off in baseball contests today as well.
North Johnston is at Bunn to open Northern Carolina Conference play in baseball and softball, while Corinth Holders heads to Louisburg.

D. Clay Best has served as the sports editor of The Herald since 1997 and has covered high school sports since 1992. He's gone through many neighborhoods of NFL-fandom including the Cowboys, Raiders and Patriots and is in limbo right now. If that's not enough to require therapy, he also has way too much brain space filled with useless info on the legendary '80s TV series "Miami Vice."
