Wilco -- and Bon Iver

Bookmark and Share

Friday night's Wilco concert in Cary began with a fine opening set by Bon Iver, the band led by former local Justin Vernon, rocking up the quiet and lovely songs from Bon Iver's gorgeous debut album. Onstage, Vernon didn't refer directly to his time living in the Triangle. But he did give a shout-out to an old pal here during the set-up to the one cover he played -- a Talk Talk song that Vernon said he was introduced to by his friend "Phil."

That was Phil Cook, who used to play with Vernon in DeYarmond Edison (and who is now one-third of Megafaun). I saw Cook in the crowd afterward; told him that I never would have pegged him for a fan of Talk Talk, an arty new-wave band known for chilly electronic atmospherics.

"Oh, dude, I love Talk Talk!" Cook enthused. "'Spirit of Eden,' what a great album!"

Megafaun's next local show is Thursday at Durham's Bull City Headquarters. Bon Iver, meanwhile, will soon be in England for a couple of shows with another Triangle band, Bowerbirds.

As for Friday's headliner, here's the review of Wilco's set -- fabulous as always.

You just convinced me to

You just convinced me to invest in Bon Iver, I have been toying with the idea of picking the disc up for months now ...

I love Wilco and seein' the band LIVE is the only way to appreciate fully.

Makes me wanna spin "A Ghost Is Born" and I will ...

Then, Summerteeth ...

Was there a Bowerbird onstage?

Describing the Bon Iver set as "fine" smacks of home cooking. By any chance was that a Bowerbird onstage? A duo of Bowerbirds pulled off an enjoyable show at the Local 506 without Mark on Thursday.

Whatever, dude

Nope, no home cooking a'tall.

I don't believe there were any Bowerbirds onstage (although I did see two of them in the crowd at the show).

Already?

Thanks for the kind words -- and wow, that was fast!

Great review of a fantastic

Great review of a fantastic show. It is amazing how the songs from the last two albums just take on a whole new life when played live. The horn section was a nice bonus too.

The show was taped and is already online here:

Can't wait to listen to it again.
