U2 rumors: Maybe, maybe not

Rumor going around
this week has the Irish mega-band U2 playing the Triangle sometime this year, possibly at Duke University's Wallace Wade Stadium -- which would be the first rock concert there since the Rolling Stones in 2005. Unfortunately, however, that appears to be wishful thinking. Word from Duke's athletic department is that the date the band wanted wouldn't fit between football home dates.

Of course, Wallace Wade isn't the only stadium in the Triangle. But there's nothing definite to report elsewhere, either. There have reportedly been conversations about UNC-Chapel Hill's Kenan Stadium; but the home football schedule is apparently not cooperating there, either. And a representative from NC State's athletic department was unaware of any plans to bring U2 to Carter-Finley Stadium.

So: Don't be surprised if you wind up having to schlep over to Charlotte again.

UPDATE (3/5/09): Stadium dates will be announced next week.

thank you

U2 and "stadium" bands in general...

Uh, Joe TarHeel...Even if an artist is capable of selling a tremendous number of concert tickets, it has no bearing whatsoever on their artistic merit, simply their popularity with the masses. On any given day, there is wonderful music being played in clubs in front of small crowds. On any other given day, one can find dreadful crap being played in front of tens of thousands in huge venues, stadiums and otherwise. Please try to remove your head from your own ass.

Bobzilla...

Did Dylan say that before or after he did a Pepsi commercial with will.i.am?

Dylan...

Zing, ouch!  He said it a couple of years ago...

couldn't fit between dates?

This is U2. Cancel or move the Duke or UNC football games, not the other way around!

please, please, please play

please, please, please play in Raleigh.

as for "IM", U2 has been selling out stadiums for nearly 30 years....long before you were born. name one of your 'newer younger bands' that could or will ever be able to say that.....

I enjoy Bono's

I enjoy Bono's global-themed, I-speak-for-all-mankind public persona every now and then. I'm being only slightly sarcastic - he has clearly done a lot to address serious problems. Their shows tend to be over the top spectacles that bring the crowds together. If that's what you're in the mood for, do it. All other things being equal, I'll be more inclined to go if they don't use TicketMasterRipoff to distribute tickets.

U2 live

Whatever one's feelings about U2's politicking, I've just gotta say that their 3D concert movie was awesome.

im

over and have been over stadium size bands. once they get that big i have already sought out newer younger bands that bring it, anway.

Great for you...

So don't go.  But why do you feel the need to act superior to those who might actually enjoy going to see them perform?

Are

*YOU* saying I'm superior?  If so, then please don't put words into my mouth.
