On the Beat

On the Beat: David Menconi on music

News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.

U2 can be a star

It's been more than 26 years since U2 darkened a stage around these parts. But that long-ago show, on a rainy April afternoon at UNC-Chapel Hill's Kenan Stadium, remains a powerful memory for those who saw it. By way of previewing U2's Saturday show in Raleigh, we compiled some remembrances of attendees here, with pictures from that 1983 show shot by N&O photographer Chris Seward. If you were at that show, feel free to share your memories in the comments section.

Also, check here for some spiel about the U2 conference happening in Durham before Saturday's show.

A rock & roll tour for the history books

Because of the business I'm in, I've attended lots of concerts -- before that Kenan Stadium show and since -- and I maintain that it's the best performance I've ever seen. It represented the peak of rock & roll passion and daring. I've seen U2 many times since, from New York to Los Angeles and back to NC, and except for the woefully misguided PopMart tour, they've always more than delivered. But nothing will ever match that 83 tour. It was historic.
