On the Beat: David Menconi on music

News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.

Staying healthy enough to play music

You might recall that there's been an immensely vigorous debate about health-care reform over the past year. Several times a month, you'll also see examples of why such reform is needed: benefit shows to raise money for uninsured musicians facing financial ruin because of a health problem. It's not just musicians, either -- sometimes it's fans.

So it seemed worth asking whether or not the Affordable Health Care Act passed this year will do anything to help. The short answer is...well, there is no short answer because at this point no one really knows. See this story for further details.

The news peg to running this story now is a show happening Sunday night at Raligh's Lincoln Theatre, a benefit for PKM's Mike Gardner, who is battling Parkinson's disease (and without insurance). For a selection of PKM photos from the group's back-in-the-day prime, see this photo gallery of shots taken by longtime N&O photographer Chris Seward.

ADDENDUM (6/8/10): And here's a photo gallery from the show.
