By now, there's a canon for just about everything -- including rock history's greatest guitar smashes. Check it out, even if John Hiatt would not approve. I think my favorite is No. 7, "'Priceless' Kid."

David Menconi has been the News & Observer's music critic since 1991. Before that, he spent a few years at the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo.; and before that, he earned a masters degree in journalism from the University of Texas (on top of an English degree from Southwestern University).

(Even if you don't own a copy of A Microphone and a Box of Dirt, the track is also on 5 Rows of Teeth -- pull it out & re-listen!)
