News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.
Next time you hear some crotchety old guy griping about "kids today," get him to check out this video -- and vote, while he's at it. The 7th grade at Raleigh's Centennial Campus Middle School made it for a contest, the "Interactive Classroom Makeover Contest," and it's one of five finalists (out of more than 300 entries) in the middle-school category. CCMS teacher Jamie Hall directed it, with lead vocals by student Caroline D'Ercole. The whole thing was shot on a $130 camcorder.
The grand prize is $25,000 worth of classroom technology, and voting concludes on Friday. So get to it.
David Menconi has been the News & Observer's music critic since 1991. Before that, he spent five years at the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo.; and before that, he earned a journalism masters degree from the University of Texas (on top of an English degree from Southwestern University). You can find more of his writing here.

Thanks to on the beat for bringing my attention to such a creative expression of how to use technology in the classroom. The video is great and the song is super catchy! Mon, 11/10/2008 - 16:44 — lhmiles2I loved this video. Imagine if all schools had this technology! Think of all the possibilities. Talk about 21st century education. Way to go everyone! It definitely needs more votes. The song is so catchy...I found myself humming the tune after the first listen. It deserves to win. I can't believe this was filmed so cheaply as well...it looks so professional! Way to go Mr. Hall and CCMS students. This is spectacular. I am going to email this to everyone and make sure they vote!
I love it more than life itself!

I find myself singing the song to myself as I ponder all the things that teachers and schools could do with fantastic teachers like Jamie Hall...and great technology resources. I am gonna tell everyone I know to rock this vote!
