News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.
Nothing about Michael Jackson's death has been simple, including his funeral. There was going to be an extravaganza of a memorial service on Friday at the late singer's Neverland ranch in California, complete with a white horse-drawn carriage. Thousands and thousands of people were going to attend.
But the public funeral has been canceled, also forcing the cancelation of a Friday afternoon remembrance service at Raleigh's Walnut Creek. The Martin Luther King All-Children's Choir was to perform, along with a live feed of events in California on the venue's big screens.
"Our objective was to get a live feed of the funeral, but that's not gonna happen," said Raleigh organizer Bruce Lightner. "That was important, to connect with other cities across the country. So it did not make sense to move forward."

Sad .... But Revealing
Thu, 07/02/2009 - 09:48 — BEL062647Mr. Menconi, seems like your blog attracts a fair share of haters. What is most ironic .... given all of the controversy and melodrama surrounding his troubled life ..... Michael Jackson will have the largest and most elaborate funeral of anyone .... anywhere ... in the history of mankind. That in itself is an indisputable testament.
Let it go, this guys music
Thu, 07/02/2009 - 05:49 — CrudeoilLet it go, this guys music was in the the 1980's, since that time just crap has come out of anything to do with MJ wheither music, little boys, blown money.
That wacked out family of his? what's up with that.
I disagree
Thu, 07/02/2009 - 10:48 — quetouSince the eighties, Michael Jackson and his Heal The World Foundation has raised more money than any celebrity onthe face of this planet. His albums after Thriller have gone to Number 1 in every country but America. His status as an icon, even after the slanderous accusations has not been supplanted. The fact that millions upon millions of people are mourning his death is a testament to his greatness. Its sad to know that just because he has not sold over his record 120 million copies,m he has somehow failed. Bad was considered a failure at 9 million, when most artist are considered "stars" for going Platinum (1 million) once!
The "blown" money was usually money given to charities. Over 350 million worth went to the poor and injured/diseased children. i wouldnt say that is "blown"
Disgusting
Thu, 07/02/2009 - 05:37 — manfred"The Martin Luther King All-Children's Choir was to perform . . .". How appropriate. Perhaps the venue should be changed to the Frank Lombard home place.
It is beyond belief how far celebrity will take you no matter what you do. Apparently even buggering kids is ok so long as you are Michael Jackson.
When Daniel Patrick Moynihan talked about defining deviancy down, he did not realize how far down it could go.
Much ado over a shell...
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 23:19 — flolakeI could pratically see the dollar signs spinning in Joe Jackson's eyes when as he has done too many idiotic impromptu clips on national t.v. for a week now.
The moron probably finally figured out what's left of the Jackson family, would likely take a big publicity hit when the charge for admission to the funeral or perhaps parking fees were dreamed about.
Sicko is as sicko does...
God bless him
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 20:23 — SeafeverThe Poster Boy for sexually and physically abused boys everywhere. Pedophiles everywhere should observe a moment of silence, and then stop abusing children--because this tormented soul is an example of how they turn out.
Too Funny
Thu, 07/02/2009 - 10:52 — quetouI would say Michael Jackson is the poster boy for Pedophiles if the Duke Lacrosse team are the poster boys for rape. Woody Allen married his daughter and you people still "love" his movies, catholic priest all over America have been raping altar boys for decades and "you" people keep turning your heads, heck Elvis beat his wife and you still cartwheel over him at Graceland.
Your little heart just bought into the media hype and the lies and you cant stomach knowing when you die, a tiny fraction of people will even notice compared to the multi-millions of people that are mourning Jackson. Your life just doesnt compare!
LOL
