On the Beat

On the Beat: David Menconi on music

News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.

The indie-rock baby boom

In case you were wondering about who did the spiffy new "On the Beat" logo this blog has, it comes courtesy of my brother Andy, who is a crackerjack multi-media artist (and the guy who got all actual talent in my family). He and I were both in Colorado last week, during which time the fabled Denver grunge band The Fluid played a reunion show. Andy was a major fan from his own band days in Denver, so he went to the show. And what was the big souvenir? Not surprisingly, given the band's greying-indie-rock demographic, a bib with The Fluid logo. Andy says he got the very last one; I expect -- or at least hope -- his daughter Cleo will wear it more than he does.
