On the Beat: David Menconi on music

News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.

Grateful Dead in NC: 336, not 919

It figures: The Grateful Dead will open their big reunion tour in North Carolina -- but over in Greensboro, rather than the Triangle, on April 12.

Raleigh's RBC Center appears to be available for that date, since the Carolina Hurricanes' final regular-season home game happens on April 9 (followed by a road game on April 11). Lots of factors go into venue selection; but the fact that Greensboro Coliseum seats about 3,000 more people than the RBC Center probably played a major part in where this show wound up

At any rate, the pre-sale starts on Jan. 13. Details are available here.

The Dead vs. the Grateful Dead

I'm curious as to why the press insists upon referring to the band as "the Grateful Dead" when it's actually "The Dead"? Yes, I know that was a nickname they went under when they were known as the Grateful Dead but "The Dead" is a completely different entity, just like "The Other Ones". They are also referring to this as a "reunion" when the same exact lineup has already toured before. For some reason, the music media also made a big deal about The Other Ones a few years back as though as it was the first time any of those musicians had performed together since Jerry Garcia's demise even though they had in fact toured as The Other Ones before and even released a live album from that tour called Only The Strange Remain. I get the impression that they either simply aren't doing their legwork or just aren't paying attention. In the case of referring to this as a "Grateful Dead reunion" I'm guessing they're taking that route since they must consider it a surefire way of garnering headlines but to me it shows a lack of research into the fact that it's actually THE Dead and not the GRATEFUL Dead. To my way of thinking, there's a huge difference. Same thing when it comes to referring to this upcoming tour as a "reunion" when it's anything but.

Grateful is gone because

It's about money now.  Why else would they let Live Nation run their tour?  That company chews people up and spits people out, and the band knows that, but doesn't seem to care.   This tour is about making as much money as possible...period.

yes

short history lesson, fyi:

Other Ones Furthur Festival 1998 by concert promoter John Scher of NJ or NY(I can't recall right this sec).  No Billy Kreutzman.  Furthur Festival originally started in 1996.

Furthur Festival 2000 TOO no Phil Lesh(not long after liver transplant yet he was still touring with his own band).

TOO 2002 Fall Tour. Phil & Bill K and other newbies.

The Dead 2003.  Add Joan Osborne.

The Dead 2004.  Subtract Barraco & Osborne add Haynes.

The Dead 2009.  Subtract Herring.

2009 . . . Still no brand new original band penned material.

Big difference

It makes much more sense to put it in the center of the state where its equidistant driving from most of the bigger populated areas in the state.

Big difference between "The Dead('03-'08)" and the The Grateful Dead. "The Dead" played Raleigh in 2004 and sucked. And didn't even remotely come close to filling up the lawn there even with $10.00 promotion lawn tickets. I bought one at that rate, but sold it after hearing a recording of a live show from early in the tour. Later I heard a live recording of Raleigh and I made the correct decision based on the performance on those discs. They were supposed to play at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre the year before in late July 2003 but bypassed Raleigh for Atlanta instead.

Anyway does anyone really want to hear a nostalgia act? One that rehearses minimally? One where alot of the original members have experienced advanced hearing loss? Indoors in crappy hockey arenas? Since the Other Ones rolled out in summer 1998 there has been no ( 0 ) brand new original band compositions or albums released. No creativity at all whatsoever. If you want to go farther back you could say that its been 20 years, 2 freaking decades, since the last Grateful Dead new original band penned music was released, 1989. Pathetic.

Raleigh isn't missing much by not getting them here.

Get Yer Yawn Yawns out, SNOOZEFEST 2009!

well...

...not necessarily -- they've played Chapel Hill, too; also Walnut Creek in Raleigh. not as much as Gboro or Charlotte, but they have played the Triangle.

Sweet!

The Dead always played Greensboro, it was either Gboro or Charlotte.

The Golden Road

I would say that Fester's comments are correct re The Grateful Dead while Jerry was still alive and kicking. Other than that hotter than hades day in July 1990 at Carter-Finley and the '93 shows in the Dean Dome the band played exclusively in Greensboro or Charlotte when they came to NC from '83 - '95. And actually as far as I am concerned any show to take place after Jerry's death is nothing more than a money-making oldies show...kind of like the stuff they show on PBS during the begathons...and doesn't really count as The Grateful Dead. IMHO of course.

Peace.
