On the Beat: David Menconi on music

News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.

Cover-up comin' back

Ever since the demise of Kings last year, one of many voids around here has been the annual "Great Cover-Up." It used to be one of the best regular shindigs ever, Halloween for the local music community. Bands would play tribute sets, going to amazing lengths to recreate (or radically deconstruct) the sound and even look of everybody from Danzig to Small Faces.

Cover-Up has been dormant since Kings closed, but it's coming back. Christopher Black Tamplin over at downtown Raleigh nightspot Tir Na Nog is reviving Cover-Up Jan. 30-Feb. 1 with the same basic format as the Kings Cover-Ups, meaning that bands and tribute subjects will not be announced in advance.

UPDATE: From the look of the comments here, some folks are not happy about this.
