When I get an interview audience with somebody famous (and often even somebody who isn't particularly famous), what usually happens is a publicist will call and connect me to the interview subject. A famous person calling directly happens seldom enough that it catches me off-guard whenever it happens. Bless her heart, Carol Burnett was one of those direct callers when I got to chat her up recently.
Of course, I had to tell her I'd grown up watching "The Carol Burnett Show," which is something she must hear all the time. But she could not have been more gracious about it.
"That's my favorite compliment," she said. "Really, it does mean a lot. I've been told that my show was appointment TV with the family, and I think that's the highest compliment you can pay a show."
For more, see the Q&A in Friday's paper, which has details about her Saturday night show in Durham.
