On the Beat: David Menconi on music

News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.

Avett Brothers roll on -- but not through here

Bookmark and Share

For those of us in the Triangle, the latest bundle of Avett Brothers news is a mixed bag. On the good side, the Concord group's "Austin City Limits" performance will air on Jan. 23; they'll be playing Merlefest in Wilkesboro on May 2; and there's this nifty new video for "Slight Figure of Speech," an anarchic parody of a low-rent shopping network with a vaguely pornographic vibe.

On the downside, the Avetts' latest round of tour dates still doesn't have a show in the Triangle. Their last show here was an opening-act set for Dave Matthews Band at Walnut Creek back in April -- and they've not played a headline show of their own around these parts since July 2008, when they sold out Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. Which means that it might be close to two years between proper Avetts shows here.

C'mon, guys, where's the love? Don't you like us no more?...

party in moore square?

according to the new disk, they're getting married and moving to brooklyn, fun, but a tad way overproduced, in my opinion, would be a great night to hear it cover to cover at Downtown Live next year?

That's what happens...

Don't you remember!? That's what happens when bands hit it big! Skipping the home-state to expand audiences elsewhere....

To give them credit, they are doing a major New Year's run in and around Western NC, close to their home base of Concord, NC.
