On the Beat: David Menconi on music

News & Observer music critic David Menconi's random (and we do mean random) musings about all things related to music and culture of the "popular" variety.

Avett Brothers go American

Bookmark and Share

The hits keep on comin' for the Avett Brothers. After making their Grand Ole Opry debut, Concord's favorite sons have hooked up with wise-man/guru producer Rick Rubin to produce their next album -- which will be coming out on Rubin's American/Columbia Records, according to the band's MySpace announcement. Rubin, of course, is the auteur behind late-career comebacks by Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond, among others. And given that the Avetts' last independently released album made the lower rungs of the Billboard charts, now seems like the perfect time to take the jump to a major label.

That should be out next year. Meantime, there's a new Avetts mini-album titled "The Second Gleam" (Ramseur Records) coming just in time for their July 26 show at Cary's Booth Amphitheatre. Avetts manager Dolph Ramseur reports that ticket sales are at 4,200 for the 7,000-capacity venue, so it's going to be a healthy crowd.

ADDENDUM (7/14/08): The Avetts conquer Delaware.

Excellent Move

While they have done very well for Ramseur records, how can you turn down an opportunity to work with Rick Rubin and be on a major label? I think this is a great move for the band. American will probably have more marketing $$$ to promote the new album. However I hope they do not compromise their original sound, it's what has gotten them this far and I'd hate to see some crazy Rick Rubin hip-hop infused in there.

Rick Rubin and the Avett Brothers

Yes, Rick Rubin might infuse hip hop into their music like he did with Johnny Cash (okay where is my sarcasm icon--irony on the internet....always dangerous)

Good for The Avett Brothers

Good for them. They have done the hard work of building a large, rabid fanbase on their own for years. Why not take a shot with Rick Rubin and a major label to see if they can get the national / international exposure they deserve?
