Four seniors stepped up to the plate for East Carolina's baseball team on Saturday. Literally.
Seniors Brandon Henderson, Drew Schieber, Ryan Wood and Stephen Batts combined for all of the Pirates' hits and RBIs as East Carolina defeated UCLA 7-5 at Clark-LeClair Stadium in the final game of a three-game series -- avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Bruins.
Earlier Saturday, UCLA topped ECU 8-6 in the completion of game suspended by rain on Friday night. Play began at 9:30 a.m. as the Pirates continued to dodge rainy conditions that covered most of the state.
In the series finale that began just before noon, the 20th-ranked Pirates rebounded behind their veterans. Schieber (2-for-4, 4 RBIs) and Henderson (3-3, 2 RBI) both homered for East Carolina. Ryan Wood went 3-for-5 and scored two runs and Batts had a hit and an RBI.
On the mound, two freshmen were the key. Kevin Brandt (3-0) pitched five solid innings out of the bullpen, giving up four runs on four hits. Mike Wright pitched final 2 1/3 innings for his first career save as East Carolina improved to 11-4.
UCLA dropped to 5-12.
