RALEIGH — Freshman shortstop Matt Bergquist delivered a two-out single with two men in scoring position to give N.C. State a 6-5 win over No. 1 Virginia in 11 innings at Doak Field Friday.

The Wolfpack (17-9, 4-6 in the ACC) had two hits heading into the eighth inning and trailed 3-1, but a two-run homer just over the centerfield wall by junior centerfielder Kyle Wilson tied the game.

In the top of the ninth inning, N.C. State reliever Rob Chamra allowed a pair of runs to score unearned on his own error, overthrowing first base, allowing
Virginia to go back up, 5-3.

In the bottom of the frame, N.C. State second baseman Dallas Poulk hit another two-run homer, this one over the right field wall, sending the game to extra innings.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, N.C. State freshman first baseman Danny Canela hit a one-out single, and then freshman left fielder Tarran Senay hit a two-out double, moving Canela to third for Bergquist, who singled to right field for the winning hit.

Wolfpack starting pitcher Jake Buchanan went 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, with seven strikeouts and one walk.

N.C. State faces Virginia (22-5. 7-3) for the second game of the series today at Doak Field at 6:30 p.m.
