Yates feeling the criticism

Bookmark and Share

CHAPEL HILL — As if Thursday night wasn't bad enough for T.J. Yates — he finished with only 64 passing yards, tossing an interception en route to blowing an 18-point lead in a loss to Florida State — the North Carolina quarterback says he had a fan throw something at him as he left the field.

Either a pin or a coin pinged off his helmet, Yates said today, but he's trying not to let the criticism get to him.

"Walking off the field, people are yelling at you and everything, so it's kind of hard not to hear it," Yates said. "... It's hard not to hear about all that stuff. I try to do my best to just try to block it out, because it doesn't really matter."

The junior has completed 108 of 183 passes this season, with eight interceptions and seven touchdowns. The Tar Heels (4-3, 0-3 ACC) must win three of their last five games to qualify for a bowl; they play at Virginia Tech (5-2, 3-1) on Thursday night.

BRIEFLY: Tight end Zack Pianalto, who sustained a head injury against the Seminoles, practiced Sunday, coach Butch Davis said.

LAST COMMENT ON SUPPORT YOUR TEAM

NOT THAT IT REALLY MATTERS BUT I USE ALL CAPS BECAUSE OF MY VISION. AS FAR AS POSTING AFTER DUKE STARTING WINNING I WAS POSTING BEFORE THAT, BUT THAT SHOULDN'T REALLY MATTER EITHER.  I AM NOT GOING TO ARGUE BACK AND FORTH THIS IS IT ON THE ARTICLE . I HAVE NEVER BEEN ONE TO DISREPECT A TEAM OR A COACH EVEN IF I DIDN'T CARE FOR THEM.  I ENJOY ALL SPORTS AND WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT MY TEAM.  GO DUKE!

ANSWER TO SUPPORT YOUR TEAM?

IT SEEMS TO ME YOU ENJOY INSULTING PEOPLE.  I GAVE MY OPINION  ON HOW I THOUGHT YATES WAS BEING TREATED.  THROWING SOMETHING AT SOMEONE IS CAUSE FOR PHYSICAL HARM  FOR THE PLAYER AND SURROUNDING PEOPLE.  NO I DIDN'T APPEAR FROM UNDER A ROCK I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN AVID SPORTS FAN AND DUKE SUPPORTER.  I HAVE MY RIGHT TO MY OPINION JUST LIKE YOU DO YOURS, BUT JUST BECAUSE YOU PAY MONEY TO SEE AN EVENT DOSEN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD THROW THINGS IF IT DOSEN'T GO YOUR WAY.  THAT IS NOT BEING SUPPORTIVE OF YOUR TEAM.  I THINK YOU JUST GET A KICK OUT OF BEING NASTY TO PEOPLE.

where to begin???

I never said it was OK to physically harm a player.  In fact, I said you could do anything BUT that when you purchased a ticket.

way to side step what I said about you crawling from underneath a rock.  you must be a politician.  I never doubted your fandom fro DUIke.  I basically siad you started posting here AFTER  the ncsu win.  how convenient for you.

thirdly, you are annoying and easy to make fun of when you post IN ALL CAPS LIKE AN 8TH GRADER!!

SUPPORT YOUR TEAM

I HAVE ALWAYS FELT YOU SHOULD SUPPORT YOUR TEAM NO MATTER WHAT.  SURE YOU ARE DISAPPOINTED WHEN THEY LOSE, BUT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING DISAPPOINTED AND DISRESPECTING . I FEEL BAD FOR YATES AND YES I AM A DIE HARD DUKE FAN , BUT THE KID DOESN'T PLAN TO GO OUT EACH GAME AND MAKE MISTAKES. HIS COACH PUTS HIM OUT THERE FOR A REASON SO THAT MUST MEAN HE THINKS HE CAN HANDLE THAT POSITION.  THE PERSON WHO THREW THE OBJECT AT HIM SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELF AND STAY HOME IF THEY CAN'T HANDLE IT. NO MATTER WHAT YATES IS STILL A PERSON WITH FEELINGS AND I KNOW IT DOES MATTER TO HIM . GIVE THE KID A BREAK.

support your team!?

funny.  you first came on the DUIke football scene, here at ACCNow, bout the time they were beating ncsu three weeks ago.  seems to me (us) you came out from under your rock for the first time in about 11 years.

if you pay to go to a game or give money to an institution, you have the right to do whatever you want to short of physically trying to hurt a human being.

This is disgusting...

Look, I am no Carolina fan, but I am sick of "fans" abusing their own players no matter for whom they play. T.J. Yates and all the other players for UNC want to win as much as any fan in the stands, but so do the players on the other side of the ball. They gave their all for their school and on this night it came up short...The game was quite good so enjoy the competition. This kind of fan reaction and the way State fans treated Beck and Evans gets around to recruits...Don't be surprised when good players go elsewhere. I think the best way to think of the performance on the field - If you really can do better get your tail out there for tryouts. Until then you need to grow up and stop acting like a spoiled brat.

what are you talking about?

this is the one negative thing said about Yates in this blog??  and it isn't even all that bad.  just talks about his concentration?

"This guy (TJY) can play big time contention football one minute and then let it fly out the doors the next minute...What's up with his concentration for football for 60 minutes?"

Misunderstand my point...

I'm talking about, specifically, the fan who threw something and, in general, fan negativity as being disgusting...Not the article's issue regarding Yate's play.

my bad,

but maybe you missed the article, last year, when they discussed all the fans at C-F booing Daniel Evans.  ***news flash*** this happenes everywhere!

if you pay for a ticket, you have the right to do what you want ... except throw things at players.  not the first time this has happened, either.

Throwing things at players is like peeing off the upper deck...

both are just bad ideas, with the potential to harm others. While Yates has not exactly been good, he is not the only problem on the offense. The O line has had a lot of problems. The RB's haven't been head turners week to week. I would say this game was with the defensive play calling, and John Shoop. Why stop running the ball in the 4th quarter? Why even attempt a forward pass? It was shown UNC could run the ball at will....so just do it. That said, this week is another opportunity. I hope the Heels nothing but success. Shock the World Tar Heels!

Way to go 'Heels fans.

Way to go 'Heels fans.

Guess it's sanctimony to criticize Butch the Savior, so you go after a kid? Niiiiiice... Well 'Heels fans, you are what you are.

Some of you might consider the possibility that Yates is a 'victim' just like you. Actually, no, not 'just like you', but even a bigger victim... Another victim of the overrated Butchie D.

The coaching staff keeps putting Yates in situations in which he has little chance to succeed. Yates is not D. Durant, he's not Chris Keldorf, he's not even Stankavage.

As I said last year, UNC's best QB is now playing at Elon.

It's amazing how the same fans that claim UNC was only a healthy TJ Yates away from beating Va Tech and going to a BCS bowl last year now blame that same TJ Yates as the team's weak link. Only from the land of the front running baby blues.

But don't take it from me, take it from one of your own:
http://www.carolinamarch.com/2009/10/7/1075920/then-there-are-the-ones-that-are

hhhhmmm??

look in the mirror.  Like you have never praised a guy one day and critizied him the next.   never?  ever?  c'mon, lie to us.  we're waiting.  go play in the street.

I don't think I've ever

I don't think I've ever critized, attacked, or even booed a player for his on the field performance.

Yes, EVER.

Stop projecting.

not exactly football related...

Two words: Brandon Costner

if I had a dollar for everytime I saw a state fan call him fat, lazy or some combination in the last two years I would be a rich man.

You bet.

I would have been responsible for at least half of your new-found riches.

Costner

Was both fat and lazy.  I have no problem with booing a player who doesn't deserve the scolarship paid for with a portion of my WPC donation.  Especially if they clearly suck and/or are lazy.

you quit

being so hypocritical of a fan base.

it is well documented about the caller to the TOB Show (2 weeks ago) telling TOB to "pack his bags."  talk about sanctamonious (Msp?)  you guys looked at TOB as your saviour as well ...

That wasn't me.

That wasn't me.

well

you cut and pasted a link from another site about Tar Heel fans b*tching about TJY?  in other words, that was not us here.

UNC best QB last year.

Did you mean Catawba?

yes, Catawba.  Thanks.

yes, Catawba.  Thanks.

TJ Yates

Please people, act your age,old and young alike. The worst thing you can do is belittle our team, good or bad. These are still very young men, they do what the coaches say.Sticks, stones and words DO HURT these kids.If whoever threw the object at Yates, you need to walk on this wk for the QB position, see how grat you would be,put yourself in Yates position,do you really think he feels good after a loss??GROW UP PEOPLE!!!

look

this is "supposed" to be big time college sports.  if we give a guy all the praise we think he needs when he does good, why can we not give him all the crap when he does bad?  afterall, he is on scholarship.

But, throwing things at him while he is on the field is another story.  I would imagine that person is no older than someone in college.

Ridiculous

Yate's is UNC's answer to Daniel Evans, but no way should anybody be throwing anything at him, no matter how small. Whoever was around that idiot (the thrower) should turn him in and he or she should be penalized, prosecuted whatever. Throw the book at 'em.

More like Daniel Evans was

More like Daniel Evans was NCSU's answer to Joe Daily, who was UNC's answer to Jay Davis (my favorite wolfpack qb of all time).

That said I don't place blame on Yates for this one.  It was the defense playing prevent for the entire second half that lost it.

And then there is Harrison Beck....

Who is incomparable.

Yates

You are right brother!!!

His Game Play is like Yo-Yo!

This guy can play big time contention football one minute and then let it fly out the doors the next minute...What's up with his concentration for football for 60 minutes?

Yates and pourous UNC pass defense

Look, Yates did gamble going for another 6 which was intercepted at the 2, and then turned into a 99 yeard touchdown pass by Ponder, after a half the distance to the goal penalty. But, giving up 33-40 and 395 to Ponder suggests much bigger weaknesses than Yates. The offensive coordinator going conservative and never passing the ball on the last drive which got us a 3, then, they went and got a 7, says something too. Pass defense stinks and Duke will score 50 on UNC to validate the problem!

woah

new lows being explored every week over in the Hole

whoa

obviously you didn't go to unc because you can't spell "whoa"
