Yahoo! report uncovers financial ties between former UNC assistant, agent

Bookmark and Share

A Yahoo! Sports report published Wednesday night, detailed a string of financial transactions dating back to May 2007 between former UNC associate head coach John Blake and NFL agent Gary Wichard.

According to the report, UNC defensive tackle Marvin Austin also made at least five trips that have come under the NCAA's scrutiny, including a pair of trips to train at a California facility less than two miles from Wichard’s agency, Pro Tect Management.

A hotel receipt from one of those trips, cited in the Yahoo! report, lists Austin’s name above Pro Tect Management. The receipt also includes an address and Marriott Rewards number belonging to an NFL marketing agent who represents two current Pro Tect clients.

Now watch-they will make so Burney and Williams will be able to play on Saturday

The all powerful and

The all powerful and conniving 'THEY'. You watch to much TV.

And if the request has merit then I would be delighted to see them on the field.

Colors

But if they get rid of Butch would the next coach change their colors back to that awful 'Carolina' blue or would they keep it the more attractive 'Duke' blue that Davis seems to prefer? That should be addressed during the interviews at least...

From a Pirate...

This situation is an example of the human tendencies that can exist within personnel at any institution, no matter how established or prestigious. I am a die-hard ECU fan and supporter, but I want every college in our state to be successful accademically and athletically. Malfeasance will eventually make a presence in every program at one time or another. I hope the situation with the UNC football team clears quickly and yields little fallout so we can focus on the enjoyment of competition and rivalry of NC teams.

and one more thing

I have written this before and I'll write it again, but I could live a whole lot easier with this mess if any of the money generated from football and basketball went to buy books for the library, pay faculty salaries, or support academic scholarships. But the fact is not a dime does. At best, the money generated from ticket sales, TV rights, and luxury boxes goes to support other sports teams and facilities, which is fine up to a point. I noticed recently that UC-Berkeley announced that it is eliminating baseball and rugby for the simple reason that the money wasn't there. Sure, it's a shame, but what's a bigger shame, contracting teams or the kind of tarnishing that takes place via the NCAA investigations and the honor courts?  The real question is this, where does all the money really go? How about a clear and open accounting? UNC is a public university after all. I suspect the results might be disturbing. The old Watergate saying "follow the money" always seems to be at the heart of any scandal of this nature.

Just when you thought it

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse.

I agree with the poster calling for Dicky B's head. He's the top dog- but Butch is the CEO. The head coach picks his assistant coach. It is his hire. Did he do his due diligence before bringing this coach on board? John Blake resigns because it's the "right thing to do".

Come on folks....this is piss poor damage control from top to bottom. Davis must go. It is the right thing to do.

pretty tough on Thorp

Thorp is in a pretty tough spot. He MUST wait until he has evidence before he fires Butch, and he CAN NOT say anything disparaging about him now or after. Having said that, looking lost in front of the camera is a bad policy (he needs to talk to the journalism school), and his continual voicing of support as opposed to cautious waiting is disconcerting, at best. People think a lot of this guy; hope he has the strength to make the tough decisions.

ezbreeze

ezbreeze says,

Baddour should've been gone after the numerous coaching change fiasco's. He is simply a vanilla loser. Davis is arrogant and corrupt. Yep, certainly is time to clean house!

Tarmegeddon - I like it, that's funny

too smart...

One of the things mentioned in the article is Marvin Austin's old assistant High School coach paying for Marvin's trips.

Nowadays, it'd be awfuly dumb for a coach to give money out.  Instead its given to asst coaches and coaches in high school to steer recruits to certain schools; also clearly they were giving the coach money to funnel it to Marvin.  Hopefully they'll subpoena this asst coach and flip him

btw, i truly believe this is going on at manyyy of the big time schools its just UNC got caught.

I don't know what assistant

I don't know what assistant high school coaches make in DC, but I have a pretty good idea about what they are making in Wake County, and I sure would find it hard to believe that any of our Wake County asst coaches would be funding multiple trips to California for one of their former students to work out.

Possible ? Sure...

Plausible ? Not a bit !

ugly

It looks like the bills are finally starting to come due in this very sad situation. Here are some questions to think about: 1) Blake's connection to Butch Davis goes back more than thirty years. How can Davis claim he had no idea what Blake was up to? 2) Why was the female tutor still employed by Butch Davis and his family after she had been dismissed as a tutor by the university? 3) Where was the Carolina athletic department oversight? 4) Has there ever been a worse time for Carolina athletics coming off last year's basketball debacle and the current football situation? 5) What are the implications of the academic fraud investigation spreading to other Carolina sports team? 6) When the dust settles who will be left standing - Davis? Baddour? the New Kenan? Thorp? This is a very early defining moment in the chancellorship of Holden Thorp. For Carolina alumni the question is this: what do we really want -- a great university or great university-branded professional sports teams? I suppose it's possible to do both -- Michigan, Stanford -- but, it sure ain't easy. The pitfalls, as we are finding out, can be devastating.

NOT in lock-step

FWIW .... I can assure you that The BOG, BOT, and Rams Club "big wigs" are NOT in lock-step agreement on this "protect Butch no matter what" campaign.

There ARE level heads among the above groups who recognize the gravity of this mess and are determined to see that a credible resolution is reached in this.  That resolution is likely not close at hand.

Convincing rabid rival fans of that is a waste of energy .... assuring concerned UNCers that there ARE rational individuals with influence involved in this is important.  Some quite foolish comments are being made that probably should not be being made by individuals who should know better.

Point taken

Point taken

Assurances

In the meantime, we're all left wonder what a "credible resolution" means.  Will they really throw some sunlight on the situation, come clean and then clean house?  I mean really clean house?

Up until now, the public actions of University officials have looked, smelled and acted more like a cover-up than a clean-up.  And you can only say "Trust Me" for so long.

All the assurances in the world aren't worth a nickel without action.

Oh, and nice job N&O !

Way to get on on top of this story, at least 11 hours after it came out on Yahoo Sports. Even the WTVD late news last night reported the story. You're really 'cutting edge' on this one...

Here we go round the "tell the truth" bush --

OOPS!!! I think the lyrics say the "mulberry bush" -- but in UNC's case, it's the "truth" bush.

And the first verse should read "this is the way we cover the truth"

Baddour and Thorp know MUCH more than they are telling us ---

It's past time for UNC to step up, tell the truth, and take the consequences, and sing, "this is the way we tell the truth."

Former UNC Chancellor Paul Hardin had the guts to speak up and tell the SMU BOV what was wrong with their football program when he was president there from 1972-74. They refused to listen, Hardin resigned rather than risk his integrity any further, and SMU later got the death penalty.

Perhaps Thorp could learn from Hardin, even if it means he must step down.  Chancellor Thorp needs to step up, tell the truth about what the investigation has "uncovered"  -- that million dollar word again --  and start UNC on the road to being a university with integrity, and give the present and future student athletes who attend classes, write their own papers, and don't cheat something to be proud about. Baddour, well, he's been singing "this is the way we explain the truth" so long, I wonder if he even knows how to tell it.

Yes, folks, before you start throwin boulders at me instead of stones, I AM a UNC alum, and a Blue supporter. But I support telling  the truth more.

Baddour and co know more than they are telling

By all means, brother, do tell us what they know and let's all get the suspense over with so you guys can focus on 4-0 and not UNC.

You guys have never been able to see the forest for the trees.

Sorry to disappoint you -- gvillegatr

common sense -- ever heard of it????? -- use your brain for something besides sarcasm -- and you'll realize what they know is something they don't want the public to know, or they would have already made statements besides "ongoing investigation," etc.

-- and I'm not a brother, nor  Red fan above Big Blue, although I must admit I'm rooting for State Sat. against VT, and RW does look good

-- sorry to disappoint you, on both counts

I'm True blue all the way through, and I love my school --  but it's time for the truth to be spoken -- we UNC alums are big boys and girls -- it may hurt and embarrass us, but we can take it ----

You didn't disappoint totally

Just come out with what you know.

Sorry, know nuthin' u haven't read here at the good ole' N&O

I just use my common sense a little more than some who post on these boards

The newspapers in my area could care less about this mess -- they're too busy worshipping at the feet of the Lane Stadium shrine

Probably need to go back to worryin' bout your Gators ---  I gotta earn some dough now, and can't continue on the board, so, until the next time......

You mean you have to work?

You mean you have to work?

Yup -- some of us retirees still have to work

That ruins the picture of the stereotypical Tar Heel senior citizen supporter for some folks, I admit  -- but hey, that's ok -- graduating from UNC didn't leave all of us rich -- right now it just leaves us embarrassed for the mess no one who has the authority cares to fix!!

I swear

Since this whole fiasco started, productivity in the Triangle has to rival what it is in Europe during the World Cup.

On second thought, productivity in the Triangle is probably still better than Europe, even after the World Cup is over.

The Buck Stops.... Where ?

Who over at UNC is going to step up and accept responsibility for the charade going on with the football program ?

Whether or not he knew about all the shady dealings, Butch Davis, as President of the Football Corporation, should be gone. Dick Baddour, as CEO, should also be out. And by not having executed the exit strategies of both by now, Chairman of the Board Thorp should be shown the door.

I keep waiting for signs of  'The Carolina Way' to shine through, and all I hear are excuses and cover-ups, and months-worth of foot-dragging.

Somebody PLEASE - act like an adult and step up !

Thanks, unc098, for showing that someone out of Chapel Hill has some maturity !

I have to much respect for

I have to much respect for Thorp to share your assessment of him. He is a new chancellor and trying to navigate some difficult waters. This is a big university with a heck of a lot more going on then Football. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Baddour is another story. He needs to go.

I originally shared your

I originally shared your respect for Thorp - he seemed to be very sincere in the first press conference about wanting to get to the bottom of the improprieties. However, the longer the process drags out, the more he seems to be in lockstep with 'Kool(Aid) and the Gang', er, Dickie B and his merry men...

His reputation is being smeared by association.

Why do the UNC coaches.....

Keep telling recruits that this will blow over in a few months.?

Self Serving Deceit

They are lying to the recruits.  Of all the wrong things done on the part of the UNC-CH football staff, this may be the one that I find most objectionable.  These kids have a one-time shot at trading their talent for a decent education and a chance to play.  The kids who were given a chance to cheat on academics are being denied their education.  And now, some of the kids who might have had a shot at playing professionally are being lured into a program that is likely to be hit with major NCAA sanctions and would therefore be a dead end opportunity for years to come.  Lying to them about this is simply a rotten thing to do.

Huh?

Where has this been reported? Are you a high school coach?

in all fairness...

the last recruit you guys got from Virginia area said: "coach said that the players would just have to repay some money and sit out a few games."

If Butch TRULY didn't know, then he's not a liar per se, but they ARE obviously telling recuits: its no biggie, (everyone's doing it)

Reports

I don't have a reference handy, but I have read at least one report of a recruit quoting a UNC-CH recruiter saying basically - not to worry about it, that it was minor, and that it would all blow over.  Thinking back, those words may have been attributed to Butch Davis himself.  Other more anecdotal reports have said similar things.   If you're interested, you should be able to find these with a bit of digging.

Probably the reason Blake

Probably the reason Blake resigned before he was fired.    Also, the reason (investigation over trips, etc.) for Marvin Austin and why he is suspended indefinitely.

Just an observation but UNC was proactive in getting rid of these 'bad eggs.'

Proactive

UNC was also proactive in paying Blake over $70,000 as he was stepping out the door.  In light of recent events, it's hard to see this as anything other than an attempt to buy Blake's loyalty and silence.

Given the long and close relationship between Butch Davis and John Blake, I find it hard to believe that Davis wasn't aware of Blake's actions as a professional agent while on his staff.  It's extremely unlikely that the buck stops with Blake.

Sorry, but 'proactive'

Sorry, but 'proactive' would've been firing Blake for being crooked, NOT allowing him to 'resign' to avoid NCAA questioning and paying him $74K in hush money. In the 'real world', if an employee of yours had acted in such a dishonest and damaging way to your company, would you be paying him a severance package ?

also ....There is no way the

also ....There is no way the heavy hitters in the Rams Club are going to tolerate this. There was a lot of dispute over hiring Davis in the first place.

The best thing that could happen is to clean house and bring in a whole new coach, staff and athletic director. Every single component of the compliance, and tutorial support system should be reformed. Lets start over and get it right.

I feel very badly for the players who are trying to do the right thing and playing their hearts out every week.

This is a black moment but the university will move on and return to its principals regarding athletics.

Heavy Hitters

This whole affair couldn't have happened without the ongoing support of at least a few key "heavy hitters" in the Ram's Club.  Hopefully the sheer shame of it all will induce some change.

True and obvious, but I can

True and obvious, but I can tell you for a fact that it is not pervasive and the ones I know haven't been supporters of Davis from the get go.

Numbers

I'm glad to hear that's the case.  My feeling is that this has more to do with the number of zeroes on certain checks than it has to do with the number of heads nodding in assent.  I would guess that three to five *major* donors could easily do their will.   Or could have prior to recent revelations.

Don't condem Butch..yet

i find it hard to believe that Baddour was aware of any of this.  There is no way he would have ignored something like this.  I'm not even sure Butch Davis was aware of the financial transactions.  Whether he should have known is a matter of opinion.  We don't all know what goes own with our own employees on a daily basis that could compromise our businesses.

If somebody wants to 'hide' something from their employer, they can.  Many times, they get caught........but not always.

I don't believe it is fair to rush to condem Butch Davis on this.  John Blake on the other hand, looks more and more like a complete sleazeball and is the epitome of whats wrong with college athletics today.

JoeT I am a born and bred

JoeT

I am a born and bred Tar Heel. At the very minimum Butch is guilty of mismanagement. I am a business owner and if I hired a CEO or top manager, at a very high salary, to run my company and the obvious trail of deception and ill practices that are going on here were allowed to continue because of oversight, he/she would be out of the building so fast they wouldn't know what hit them.

Transactions

unc098, just follow the link in this story to the Yahoo! Sports story.  It's all laid out there. For Marvin, there's hotel receipts listing the agency.  For Blake, there's evidence cited of wire transfers from the agency, a "loan" from Wichard, and Blake having a credit card that bills back to the agency.

In simple terms, Blake was effectively acting as an agent while holding the position of Associate Head Coach at UNC-CH.  As far as I know, this finding is unprecedented.   And likely just the beginning of what will be found.  Details of how Blake was distributing this money should follow.  And details around how much Butch, Baddour and others knew about this.  And what was going on that allowed the compliance team to fail in their duties.

And this is just the beginning of the money trail involving one agent.  More to come, see: Greg Little, et.al.

Never mind.....just read the

Never mind.....just read the article. I would say that was rather comprehensive....Ughh...What a mess. Marvin might as well pack his bags. I would be surprised, as I have stated before, to see Davis survive this......So whose our next coach?

since the n&o is failing

since the n&o is failing miserably at covering this story - and you have to question their motivations - I'm glad that the national media is on it.

Pockets

Who do you think has deeper pockets in 2010? The N&O or an Internet company called Yahoo!?

how deep do the n&o's

how deep do the n&o's pockets have to be to have reporters already on the payroll spend some time talking to people and following leads?

BIGGEST LOCAL SPORTS STORY IN DECADES

This is panning out to be the biggest local sports story in decades.  And will have repurcussions for years to come.  You would think that we would be seeing a bit more from the local newspaper of record.

WHY ????

WHY in the midst of an "ongoing investigation" with obviously "more" to be uncovered .... do Bob Winston, Dick Baddour and Holden Thorp feel it necessary to keep stating their full support of Butch Davis ???

Baddour has a history of "he said WHAT?" but Winston and Thorp are men of a more prudent nature.

For an ongoing "internal investigation" to have any credibility, how can the internal investigators continue to absolve a rather key individual (!!) from any wrong doing? This is NOT going well at all.

Just curious...so what are

Just curious...so what are these transactions? Are these listed?

This may be the first time

This may be the first time in history that an assistant head coach has ever been proven to be an agent.  This is true Tarmegeddon.
