WVU nips Heels in wild Meineke Bowl

Hakeem Nicks caught three touchdowns and racked up more than 200 yards but it wasn't enough to end UNC's season — and perhaps his college career — with a bowl win.

West Virginia quarterback Pat White threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns to out-duel Nicks and give the Mountaineers a 31-30 win in the Meineke Bowl in Charlotte.

Nicks, a Charlotte native, caught all three of his touchdowns in the first half as UNC built a 23-21 lead.

The two teams were trading points like paint in NASCAR's hub in the first half but the scoring slowed in the final 30 minutes.

White's 20-yard TD pass to Alric Arnett put WVU up for good at 7:29 in the fourth quarter.

Pat Lazear picked off UNC quarterback T.J. Yates with 2:07 left to seal the game for the Mountaineers (9-4).

Yates' four-yard touchdown run at 4:29 in the third quarter gave UNC a 30-24 lead.

Pat McAfee's 25-yard field goal had given WVU a brief a 24-23 advantage.

A circus catch by Nicks — one hand, through his legs, behind his back and off the defender — set up Yates' short TD scramble.

Nicks, a junior, was already on the NFL scouts' radar for early entry because of the numbers (60 catches, 1,005 yards, 9 TDs) he posted in the Heels' 8-4 season. With a huge showing today, he may have no choice but to leave Chapel Hill before his senior season with his stock at an all-time high.

Nicks has TD catches of 73, 66 and 25 yards in the first half and eight catches for 217 yards. He has also already set a new career high for yards, and new school records for single season touchdowns (the previous was nine, by Marcus Wall in 1994) and career touchdowns (the previously was 19 by Octavus Barnes from 1994-97).

In his final college game, White threw two long touchdown passes in the first half, the second to Bradley Starks from 35 yards out to give the Mountaineers a 21-14 lead.

WVU stopped Yates on fourth-and-goal from the 2 but on the next play, UNC's Deunta Williams tackled Noel Devine in the end zone for a safety.

West Virginia led 7-0 and 14-7 getting a conventional 18-yard run from Noel Devine and a big pass play from White to Arnett from 44 yards out.

Cooter Arnold hit Nicks on a 66-yard trick play to tie the game at 14.

Yates hooked up with Nicks for a 73-yard touchdown pass for UNC's first TD.

Nicks finished the first quarter with three catches for 138 yards.

fans...??!!

It would be nice to see the wine and cheese fans that come out and support the Heels get out of their seats and make some noise for a change. I've been going to UNC football games for 20 years and I have to tell you I was embarrassed this past Saturday in Charlotte- but not by the football team.
I had a wonderful time and enjoyed a great game but while I witnessed a very supportive and loud group in the West Virginia fans the the Heel fans that sat in our section rarely got off their butts.
That's not how you support a football team. Even before the game, WVU fans were geared up, loud, in unison, all we heard tailgating was "Let's Go....MOUNTAINEERS..."
Folks in light blue sipped their toddies and kept their heads down. During the game WVU fans chanted in unison after every first down- first down, W - V- U! They represented, that's for sure.
I'm just saying.
If you were there you saw it too. Us fans need to man up and support the boys on the field.
Deadicated, but frustrated---

hhhmmm

didnt get to see a lick of the game b/c of grooms golf and then the wedding but I understand UNC gave one away late. sh*t happens. learn from it and hopefully next year will be 9 or 10 wins.

as far as jpdohio goes ... nobodys fanbase shows up here when they lose so I dont understand why you said what you did. DUIke football got some talk early and then they disappeared. ACCNow was a ghost town when it came t pack football from the 3rd week of Sept unill about 4 weeks ago.

people just dont want to hear the sh*t. I'm sure they get enough of it from work/friends. so dont act all high and mighty about "where are the Heel fans!"

Hey, Gatr

Hope you had a good time this weekend. Seriously.  Just calling out the hypocrits, as you do so well so often.

Anyway, needed to get one last shot in. Won't be many opportunities during B-ball season.

YAY!

Those hillbillies layed the smackdown on you hillbillies!!!

So... JPDOhio, who is your

So... JPDOhio, who is your team? I want to know? Will be interesting to see who you root for. The Woofpeckers? If so, where have all of your posts been this week? Fairweather? Yes.

Go Heels!
Alot of disappointed Heel fans. No wonder we don't want to post. Why would be you moron.

Go Heels! ACC champs next year!

If you don't know...

then you're new. Fair enough. Stick around and you'll see soon enough.

So where is everybody?

More evidence that most (not all) Tar Heel fans rank right up there with Yankee fans as frontrunners. When they are winning, the posts come fast and furious, including more than a few digs about how Pack fans don't support their team. But lose a game and they are nowhere to be found.

It's sad because yesterday's game was probably the best Bowl game played so far. I didn't watch the entire game, but every time I flipped it on, Nicks was adding another Sports Center moment. As far as I can tell from the reports, UNC has nothing to hang their heads over.

Fact is, they are improving, but not there yet. They should be good again next year and, if they can keep Butch, will be a contender for the ACC title before too long. Then, perhaps the fair weather fans will return on a consistent basis.

Indeed, JPDOhio....

it seems more NCSU fans have a stake in the Heels' successes and failures than UNC fans. I feel great about the future of Tar Heel football. I fully expect this team to be in contention year in and out in the near future. To think less is to give a disservice to the coaches and players (present and future).  Go Heels!!!

I was at the game.

Nicks was great. I'm pretty sure where he's headed now. The Heels will be better next year. White was good. The Heels had chances. oh well.

glad the heels lost

Start Yates???? Stupid...anyway, glad they lost..

Raise?

Give Butch a raise. B U T C H S L A P......oh yeah!

What an awesome, belated

What an awesome, belated Christmas present!
