West Virginia has accepted a bid to play in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 27 at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, bowl officials announced late Saturday night.

The Mountaineers finished the regular season with an 8-4 record, 5-2 in the Big East, which was good for a tie for second place.

“The Mountaineers have proven to be a very talented and formidable team this season,” bowl executive director Will Webb said in a statement. “We feel that they will make the 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl a very exciting contest.”

This will be West Virginia’s second appearance in the bowl. In the inaugural game on Dec. 28, 2002, the Mountaineers fell 48-22 to Virginia in front of a sold-out stadium.

West Virginia will meet an ACC opponent to be announced this afternoon. All signs point to North Carolina as the ACC selection, but that is contingent on the Champs Sports Bowl passing on the Tar Heels to select Florida State.
