Russell Wilson plans to play both college football for N.C. State and professional baseball in the Colorado Rockies' minor-league system.
Wilson, who was taken in the fourth-round of the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday, said he will return to N.C. State for his junior season in football but only after spending the summer in the Rockies' organization.
"They know my situation," Wilson said. "They know I love football. That's why they drafted me because they like me. We will continue to talk and figure this thing out."
Wilson has played both football and baseball at N.C. State. If he signs with the Rockies, as he said he intends to do, his college baseball career would be over. His college football career would also appear to be over after the 2010 season, despite the fact that he has two seasons of football eligibility left.
"I'm not worried about that right now," Wilson said. "I try to focus on one thing at a time."
There's also the question of whether the Rockies will sign Wilson and allow him to play football and be exposed to an injury. Running back Ricky Williams played both college football at Texas and minor-league baseball in the late 1990s. Wilson sounded confident that the Rockies would allow him to continue his football career.
"It's all going to work out just fine," Wilson said.
A spokesman for the Rockies said the team's management staff was still busy with the MLB draft and declined to comment.
N.C. State's football practice begins Aug. 3 and coach Tom O'Brien expects Wilson to join the team then. O'Brien said the details of Wilson's summer schedule still need to be worked out but was confident Wilson would be his quarterback in 2010.
"There are lot of thing that have to be discussed," O'Brien said. "One thing I do know about Russell, if he wants to play football, then that's what he's going to do."

Wed, 06/09/2010 - 22:11 — willncsuWe will only win 3-4 games with our schedule (one will be against UNC).
Funny
Thu, 06/10/2010 - 11:38 — SurferYes, one game on your schedule is UNC, but I wouldn't count it as a win just yet (even if you were to take 4 knees). Esp. if RW does not play, which I think he will. Gosh with him last year the Pack barely squeaked by, with UNC shooting themselves in the foot (see C. Barth field goal attempt).
So, yes it could happen again this year, but if the UNC defense can score enough points then perhaps it won't be so close.

Thu, 06/10/2010 - 00:23 — Heels20you took 3 knees and punted it on every drive, that could actually happen. At the rate Yates is going, he'll be throwing the ball backwards by November.

Just listened to the teleconference
Wed, 06/09/2010 - 21:09 — Heels20And I'm confused about a few things. Russell continuously states that his intentions are to play football and baseball, and that he believes things will work out that way. However, he also reiterates that he has yet to really discuss the situation with either O'Brien or the Rockies. O'Brien at one point stated that if Wilson wants to play football, then he expects him to be present for summer practice starting on August 3rd. At the same time, he also said that if Russell Wants to play football, then he will. What would happen in the situation that the Rockies would not allow him to return to the football field that early? I wish him the best and hope he can play both, but it seems like there are so many more issues that need to be worked out that ultimately may not allow him to pursue a future in each sport.
Sounds normal to me.
Thu, 06/10/2010 - 09:28 — JPDOhioI haven't listened to the teleconference, but what you describe does not sound unusual to me. I am certain that RW had discussions with representatives of the Rockies before they drafted him. They obviously were comfortable enough to use a surprisingly high draft pick on him. Now comes the hard part-contract negotiations.
In the real world, there would be a confidentiality agreement signed by the parties to avoid uninformed public speculation (like what I am doing now) and potential embarrassment. No way such an agreement is happening in today's sports reporting environment. So what may look like uncertainty or lack of preparation may really just be the early stages of the normal process of negotiation. All the talk up to now is just talk. You don't have a deal until the deal is done and everyone signs off.
Someone referred to TOB's comments as an ultimatum. I don't see it that way. By most accounts, RW is disciplined enough that he can handle responsibilities that would bury most normal people. I think that's the context in which TOB's "if Russell wants to play football, he will" comment should be looked at. The expectation that RW should be present for the beginnning of preseason practice may be an ultimatum, but it is a reasonable one.
If RW does sign with the Rockies, he would likely start his career with their short season Rookie League affiliate. Short season runs into September, so Russell would have to leave early to join the Pack for preseason practice. He would also miss the Fall Instructional League, which would set his development back. The Rockies might agree to this if he leaves some money on the table and agrees to focus on basball exclusively after football season is over. This too is part of the normal give and take of negotiation.
One thing I am sure of. Russell gains nothing by refusing to sign and then playing another season of baseball at State. I used to think (as long ago as last week), that he would be drafted low because he couldn't break into the starting lineup on a bubble team. I now wonder how Coach Avent couldn't find a regular spot in the starting lineup for a 4th round draft pick. That and Avent's questionable decision on who to start against Stony Brook (along with a nudge by Gatr) have me doubting his abilities.
The good news is that, the longer this drags out, the more we have to talk about in the dog days of summer. The bad news is that Pack fans will have to double their anxiety meds until we know for sure.

Thu, 06/10/2010 - 08:20 — unc098Gotta feeling the tail is going to way the dog in this situation. I can't see TOB doing anything to keep Wilson from playing. He is going to have to back off his ultimatums otherwise he will be committing coaching suicide. With a new AD he is on the hot seat as it is.
it is called "leverage."
Wed, 06/09/2010 - 21:51 — gvillegatrhe's trying to squeeze more money out of the Rockies. The more he says he really wants to play football, the more the Rockies may give him?
He's waiting on the NFL
Wed, 06/09/2010 - 01:04 — williamlI wonder if part of this is him wanting to wait for an NFL/MLB decision until the picture for the NFL's CBA is clearer. Better to make some money with baseball than take a chance on no NFL in 2011 and no money at all.
I didn't see that one coming
Tue, 06/08/2010 - 21:20 — JPDOhioBut it is good news.
I doubt that the Rockies would have used that high a pick without some idea of what Russell had in mind. My guess is that he signs, but probably leaves some money on the table so that he can leave his team early to return to Raleigh and skip the fall instructional league.
I am not sure what his status is academically, but it is possible he will have his degree by the end of fall semester. So he gets one last football season in, graduates and heads straight to spring training.
Not a bad plan. Of course, I have been wrong before, like earlier today.
Academic Standing
Wed, 06/09/2010 - 11:29 — SurferFor some reason I was thinking that he would have been able to complete his academic requirements for graduation by this Spring?
As far as football I hope he is back and healthy for the Fall. Esp. when the Pack rolls into Chapel Hill, I hope they are firing on all cylinders. I really think that there will not be a repeat of last year's "luck". Of course, a repeat of the game two years ago would be a complete disaster, I can't remember the score, but I am sure Coach Davis does....
Refresher
Wed, 06/09/2010 - 15:49 — YAR8packTwo years ago: 41-10. Pardon. Couldn't refrain from such an easy opportunity.
Had a chance to look at Phil Steele's schedule rankings for NC State and unc? The Pack's schedule is rated 14th most difficult out of 119 NCAA Div I (or whatever the hell it's called) teams. unc ranks 24th. Phil's a rather good prognosticator.
OK GO STATE!
Score
Thu, 06/10/2010 - 11:46 — SurferMy score recall comment was tongue in cheek. I was there and stayed until the bitter end. Be assured, my State grad friends will not let me forget it. But perhaps one day I will. Certainly a UNC victory this year would be a starting point.
Speaking of our little "OK GO" gnat friend, he must have already been sent away to camp for the summer.
I am sure his Ps couldn't
Thu, 06/10/2010 - 21:33 — unc098I am sure his Ps couldn't wait to off load the gnaticus braticus into some worthwhile away camp. Hopefully there aren't any computers there.
Steele is a smart guy
Wed, 06/09/2010 - 16:25 — Heels20But it don't matter how tough your schedule is if you can't win the games. TOB has yet to post a winning record, so I imagine that trend will continue with the 14th toughest schedule in the country.
Other Wilson Post

Weinke
Tue, 06/08/2010 - 18:23 — melvinfurdThat's not significantly different from Chris Weinke's experience of playing professional baseball for six years before entering FSU and playing college football for the Semiholes. (Yes, it is different . . . )
That's what I was thinking
Wed, 06/09/2010 - 01:40 — Heels20I remember Weinke had been with the Blue Jay's organization before he came to college, but I wasn't sure how the rules worked as far as playing both at the same time. As far as I'm concerned, if he can pull off pro baseball, college football and academics all at once, then let him do it.
Nice
Tue, 06/08/2010 - 16:25 — Heels20Didn't know you could do that, but that sounds like it worked out well for a great athlete and a great person. Best of luck to Russell (except in Chapel Hill).
Not anything new
Tue, 06/08/2010 - 21:45 — HeelsforeverMike Thomas did it at Carolina years ago. He played football for the Heels and played minor league baseball during the summers. I believe it was in the Orioles organization. He had to pay his own way at Carolina though.
I feel ya
Wed, 06/09/2010 - 01:39 — Heels20I actually don't remember that one, but that's pretty cool. It'll be interesting to see if Wilson plays just his junior year, or rolls with 4 years of football and keeps baseball on the side.
