UNC basketball coach Roy Williams issued this statement:
"This is a sad day. Anytime you have this type of disruption it is very difficult on the student-athletes, but also for families. It is a sad day for both Butch Davis and Dick Baddour and their families.
"I hope now that the Tar Heel family will get behind Chancellor Thorp, pull together and move forward from this difficult day. Our student-athletes have shown tremendous ability to bounce back from adversity and I fully expect that the young men on the football team will continue to do that and represent UNC with the same heart and effort that they did last fall.
"Dick Baddour is one of the finest gentlemen I have ever known. I can’t think of anyone that loves the University of North Carolina more than Dick. For some time I’ve known that this was probably going to be his last year as athletic director and I worried about how I would handle it. But the suddenness and swiftness of today’s action makes it even more difficult. By offering to step aside earlier than expected, he has sacrificed personally for what is best for our student-athletes and University. We should applaud and support him in that decision.
"I’ve been so fortunate to have known and worked with Dick for many years. He has given 45 wonderful years of service to the University. He has an entire family of Tar Heels.
"Dick was extremely important in my return to UNC eight years ago. I probably would not have come back at that time had he not handled the hiring process the way he did. I will miss working with him a great deal.
"I have been fortunate to work with two fantastic athletic directors in Bob Frederick (at Kansas) and DickBaddour – they set an unbelievably high standard for any other athletic director to match. They stand for all that is right in college athletics."

Thu, 07/28/2011 - 22:56 — PackMan97Will someone, anyone, please make the NCAA go away before they realize that many of my basketball players took the same Swahilli course that Michael McAdoo took? Please make them go away before they start looking into our parking tickets and cars. Make them go away before they look into some of the houses my players live in. Just let me click my ruby red slippers a few times and wake up and all this will be a very bad dream.
Swahilli course
Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:08 — gvillegatrI'm still waiting to hear that the Swahilli professor was fired or the head of the students which may be the College of Arts and Sciences ? Afterall, they have more to do with academics than any coach would.
they will

Thu, 07/28/2011 - 21:41 — InspectorPittRoy, there comes a time when it is better just not to speak.
Matt Doherty
Thu, 07/28/2011 - 21:19 — cpaguysI have a hunch that Matt Doherty had a good day today.
He may have allowed himself a small smile
Thu, 07/28/2011 - 21:38 — gvillegatrBut no more. Tar Heel through and through. In the end, he was wrong at UNC and for UNC at the time.
They all were
Thu, 07/28/2011 - 23:16 — cpaguysAs were all of Baddour's hires except one. And you can't give him credit for that one. Matt wasn't the only one smiling today. He just may have earned it the most. He may have been wrong for the program, but the way his dismissal was handled wasn't right. This is just one of Baddour's mistakes over the years.
I hate to hear Coach Williams talk under these circumstances
Thu, 07/28/2011 - 20:56 — gvillegatrBut you've never heard K talk on anything negative or uncomfortable at DUIke and there have been ample times to speak up. I hate giving Coach props under the circumstances, but props. He is unequivocally a disciple of Coach Smith.
Can't believe I'm defending 'em
Fri, 07/29/2011 - 01:00 — mad_maxWhen has Duke ever faced 9 major NCAA violations at the same time and had their AD resign because of it? Nobody can compare UNC's investigation to OSU's or USC's because they are too different. Yet you want to bring Duke into a comparison like this? Hypocrite.
It's sad that you have to try and bring other schools into this. This isn't about Duke or coach K...this is about your own corrupt program at UNC.
Also, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure coach K spoke up during/after the Duke lacrosse scandal.
Ha !
Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:03 — gvillegatrYou wrote out a post (calling me out as usual) about hypocrite and bringing other schools into this and you can't resist offering your two cents on the subject. Nice.
The Dook Lacrosse scandal was precisely what I had in mind. Not one time did K take a side or offer anything about it during or right after. The guy never talks.
Just face it maxy, I could say it is 102 degrees outside and you'd be on here within 10 mins telling me, "BS, it is 101."
Sharecropper Typical coach

Typical coach claptrap. "Finest gentleman" he's "ever known"? Really? Hello, is Dean Smith still around? Or all of the "gentlemen" who boosted his career long before he came back to Carolina? Look, it is a house dealer dealing. Baddour and Davis deserved the ax long before this, and Thorp kneecapped them only because he knows he is next. He is desperate to save his phony baloney job after backing the wrong horses in a great scandal. One suspects the backbreaker was the sudden acknowledgement that one of its "student atheletes" -- god, what drivel that is -- got caught stealing, copying and claiming material for a paper written more than a hundred years ago by some unknown author, and caught not by the vaunted Carolina academic process, but by NC State bloggers. My god. Because that makes it clear that nobody at Carolina wanted to know what McAdoo was "writing". His tutor not only cribbed his bibliography for him, but wrote the damn paper .., all, as they might say, as Carolina more or less slept. Goodbye, Chancellor Thorp. Don't let the door of my university hit you on the way out.
Whew
Thu, 07/28/2011 - 21:02 — gvillegatrI bet you feel better after all that. Kinda like taking dump ? Does Max have a second handle ? Cheater :)

Fri, 07/29/2011 - 00:53 — mad_maxOh no! Someone has a different opinion than gatr, and is therefore delusionally wrong. It MUST be mad_max disguising himself as a UNC fan.
You are truly pathetic. This scandal has ruined you.
I guess you missed the smiley face
Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:15 — gvillegatrBut whatever.
The difference b/tn me and you is in your last sentence, "This scandal has ruined you."
You really are all consumed with me if that's what you think about me !
