Williams says Tar Heels won't splinter

Bookmark and Share

North Carolina coach Roy Williams knows his team has to improve in both practice and during games to dig out of its 2-4 ACC start. But he said Monday that he’s not worried that his team, which is quickly slipping off the NCAA tournament berth bubble, will pull apart in any way.

“I don’t really see that as a problem whatever; I don’t think they’ll get splintered,’’ he said during the ACC conference call. “I think they’re a group of kids that do like each other, do enjoy each other’s company. I don’t see any factions drifting off one way, and another group drifting of another way. I don’t’ see any cliques on the team by any means. We’ve got to invest a little bit more, and maybe if we invest a little bit more, those habits will be there on game night. Because right now, they’re not habits. … To me, maybe I’m naïve, but I don’t really have any concerns about any cliques forming.”

Some other questions and answers from the weekly call:

Q: What are the issues you’re most concerned with? Leadership? Attention to detail? Taking in information?

A: I think it’s everything. If I could pick out one thing, it would be easier to attack. But we worked on trying to guard the dribble and stop dribble penetration, and we didn’t do a very good job with that. We wanted to try to move the ball quickly and have good spacing, and [get] quality shots for us, and make sure the quality of their shots were not very good. We wanted to dominate the backboards, and I’m not sure any of those things happened. So it’s not just one thing, we have some work to do. There’s no question about it.

Q: Is there something with this team that gives you hope that you can get through this?

A: Well, I always have hope, there’s no question about that. It’s the only way I know to go about doing it, is to work as hard as we possibly can. The kids have the day off; that’s the way we originally planned it, and I started to change it, but they’ll have some private time, and we’ll have some great practices on Tuesday and Wednesday and face a big-time challenge, a big-time test, on Thursday.

Q: Said last night that the things you’ve done your entire career in coaching aren’t working with this group. What are some examples of those things that aren’t working?

A: It’s the total practice. The day before, we go crazy about not getting great defensive balance, but last night in the game, we didn’t have defensive balance. We’ve had 61 practices now, and the things I’ve preached the previous 21 years seemed to work, and the things I preach this year that are the same as those 21 haven’t worked. So I’ve got to find a different way to do it; find something different. I think every year, you make different changes. Some of them subtle, some of them bigger changes. We’re not runnin the ball like I like to run it. We’re playing zone, we’ve changed three or four different offenses that we’ve tried to use, rather than sticking with one that I’ve done most of my career. Right now, it hasn’t worked as well as we’d like for it to work. I’m at my wit’s end, but at the same time, I still have to keep trying to thing of something; I still have to keep working, and I still have to make sure they keep working. If not, we don’t have any chance whatsoever. So we’re going to twink around with it a little bit, and see if we can change a few other things, and get kids to buy into it a little more, and take it from the practice court to game night.

Q: Have you ever been this deep in a season when you were still trying to figure out what to tweak as far as coaching?

A: No. Never have. But I’ve lived a pretty charmed life. Kids have always just bought into what we said,a nd it seemed to work. It hasn’t’ seemed to work as well this year, so we just have to keep trying.

Q: What do you feel like you need to get better to help this team?

A: I’ve coach basically the same way for 21 years, just making little changes to fit our personnel. And it seemed to work – and it hasn’t seemed to work with this group. And I’ve got to find a way to get it to work. The changes we make, whether big or little, has to fit this team. And the other thing is, the care, the attention to detail, how focused we are and what it means to go from the practice court to the game night, I’ve got to figure out a way to invest more in it.

Hansbrough

What do you think the heels would have been the last 4 years without hansbrough? Any average coach could have coached the heels last year and at least made the final four. Now, there is no more hansbrough or lawson and the heels are simply average. Are you surprised? Ol' Huckleberry is an average coach, but a great recruiter. Currently the heels have good talent, not great talent and no leadership. Mix this up with an average coach and you have an underachieving team. I know all you heels fans will look at roy's overall record, but that has a great deal to do with his recruiting. Golly gee, gosh darn it, huckleberry will charm recruits with his southern drawl, but when it comes to the x's and the o's...mayberry, we have a problem.

Average coach?

This is an inexperienced team that still has big wins over MSU, Ohio State (with Evan Turner) and a slaughtering of VT.  Our oldest McDonald's All-American is a sophomore and Deon Thompson is our only starter that has yet to suffer an injury this season.  I know your dark blue sunglasses are blinding you, but recognize the fact that since Roy arrived at Carolina, his recruiting classes are ranked at an average of number 10 every year.  In that same period, Krzaslkdjf;als's classes have averaged at number 12.  Not much of a difference at all.  However, in that same period, Dook has reached the Final Four just once.  Roy has made 3 Final Fours and won 2 national titles.  That, my friend, is a VERY big difference.

I'd also like to add that the likes of Marvin Williams, Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants, Sean May, Brandan Wright, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington have all left early for the NBA.  Dook has been able to hold on to its highly-touted recruits for the most part, as Josh McRoberts and Gerald Henderson are the only two I can think of who have left early for the pros since that time (I didn't look it up, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

You can use all the transfers as an excuse, but that doesn't explain the multiple busts we've seen wearing the dark blue: Shavlik Randolph, Martynas Pocious, Greg Paulus, Brian Zoubek and the not-so-up-and-coming Ryan Kelly.

So before you once again pollute this board with pure bias and weak theory, take the time to realize that what's coming out of your mouth (or from your keyboard) is being laughed at by any reasonable person who reads it.

This thread is not about

This thread is not about Coach K, it is about the roy and the heels.  I am stating that roy is an average coach and your reply does nothing to dispute that.  All you are doing is trying to bash Coach K.  You call it a "weak theory" but please give me an example of how roy has had a team overacheive during his time in chapel hill???  Again, take Hansbrough away and he is just another coach.  And don't even try to argue this point by talking about the players that doherty handed him.  Again, any average coach could have won with that team.

the 2005 team

They were not even considered a "team" by the prognaticators or critics alike.

It was not said who was going to transfer and who was not but it was widely rported that a handful of them were going to transfer.

Coach Williams had sit downs with all of them and they all stayed.

He made this group of individuals a TEAM.

It is the only reason they won the 2005 NC.  They bought into what Coach was selling and then they performed it on the bball courts.

To sum this up for you, Coach Daughrtey recruited the nucleus, but these guys were ready and willing to walk.  Coach Williams turned these guys around with HIS COACHING STYLE and they won the title as a TEAM.

My argument

is that to say Roy has been an average coach since the '03-'04 season is to say Krzsadf;ljkds has been a below average coach since that season.  I think we both agree that it is ridiculous to say Krzasdflkjask; has been an average coach since that time.  However, that only emphasizes the insanity of your bias, in that Roy has accomplished much more with essentially the same tools.

Any way, you threw some more bait, so I'll take it.  So you're telling me to judge Roy Williams based off of his time in Chapel Hill, excluding the teams inherited from Doherty and teams that Hansbrough played on.  Okay, Roy Williams is a little over halfway through his 22nd season of coaching.  In 21 years, he made the NCAA tournament 20 times (only missing it his first season after INHERITING a program that was on probation) and had a higher win percentage than any coach over that period of time.  He made 7 Final Fours, 4 Championship games and won 2 NCAA titles.

But you're saying we should negate all that, and base his coaching ability off of half a season that has been plagued by injuries and highlighted by inconsistency due to inexperience.  This, of course, all being judged during a season that isn't even close to its end.

So if you're asking if I am pleased with our record at the moment, the answer is no.  Do I think Roy is at fault?  I question why Ginyard is still playing and wonder if we would be better off by giving the Wears more minutes, but I don't have a resume made up of 21 seasons of pure winning.  Now, if you disagree, and think Roy's 21 and a half-year head coaching career should be judged by the half-year of struggles of a young, injured team, then be my guest.  But as I said, sane human beings will only laugh at you.

Josh McRoberts

Shouldn't he be included on the "multiple bust" list?

Absolutely

But he only played two years and despite not coming any where near fulfilling expectations, he made it to the pros.  I'll be leniant and give the Dookies the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Not all McDonalds All

Not all McDonalds All Americans turn out to be great.  Duke has had their share of great ones.  If a player does not turn out to be quite as good as they are hyped to be, is that the fault of the team or the scouting service that praised him?  The players you listed were good, but never great and it is not like they went to the pros and tore it up.  I am not really sure what your point was here and how you argued against my initial point

ok

what would DUIke have done if they hadn't had Laettner?  Any average coach could have coached them to the Final 4.  Now after there was no more Laettner DUIke didn't win the ACC regular season or Tourney and only managed to progress to the 2nd round of the ncaa tourney.  were you surprised? Krushekov was an avg coach but a great recruiter.  In 93 DUIke had good talent, but not great talent and even had Bobby Hurley sill running the point WITH leadership. (But, like I said, you won nothing in 93 and lost in the 2nd round.)

what did that say about Krushekov.

Now you are reading this and thinking how stupid it is.  Well, i'm just making fun of you.  B/c what you said is the dumbest thing this board has ever seen (and yar8pack posts here).  At least we all know BC69 does not mean any of what he says.

You, however, believe what you posted.  shame, shame.  considering all your coach has done for DUIke since Coach Williams has been in CH, you have no business telling Carolina fans what you think of our Coach.  (lets see if you bite on the word "our")  Krusheshkov and his coaching staff have long been obsolete in big time collegiate basketball.

-gatr.

Two years after Laettner

Two years after Laettner graduated they were in the national championship game.  The year before Laettner got there, they were in the final four.  So, I am sure Duke would have been just fine.  A different looking team, but just fine.  In fact I am sure that Duke's record in 93 was quite a bit different that unc's will be this year.

Now, I will pose the same question to you:  When has roy taken a team and taken them above expectations?  Certainly not in the last 15 years.  Dean Smith and even Bill Guthridge were outstanding coaches.  Thats right, COACHES.  Smith ALWAYS had the heels in the top 2-3 of the ACC no matter who was on the team.  Roy does not coach, he recruites and then passes blame to his players and lashes out at fans (like yourself) when things don't go well.

You said that my comments was the dumbest thing this board has ever seen, yet all of you can't defend roy, you can only try to throw your opinions about Duke and Coach K.  WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HUCKLEBERRY and the heels.  Now, defend your coach.

This post made me laugh

Roy took the 2005 team above expectations, as they won a national championship when they weren't the preseason favorite.  In 2006, they finished 2nd in the ACC after losing their top 7 scorers from the previous season.  You can whine about Hansbrough all you want, but any coach that finishes 2nd in the ACC with Wes Miller and freshman Bobby Frasor running the point deserves national coach of the year honors.

You say that any one could win with those players.  If that's true, then why is it that Krasdlkjf;a receives commitments from players of the same caliber, who stay longer, and yet is still unable to make it past the Sweet 16?

chris latner92!!!

very well put!! u must be a duke grad, ok, go duke!!!!!!!!!!!

Burn (or is it hang?) ol Roy in effigy

They think they going pro...they won't qualify for the d-league...or the european leagues..look like scrub city found their way to UNC...what a trick? HOLES 10 HOOS 1

McDonald's All-Americans
New Mon, 02/01/2010 - 14:22 — Heels20

Sylven Landesberg was a McDonald's All-American. Come back when you know what you're talking about.
==================
You're right 10-1....should make that Holes Dome humiliation less painful now...god love those frozen Kool-ade painkillers....

Still wrong

We have 7 McDonald's All-Americans: 4 freshmen and 3 sophomores.  One of the sophomores is hurt and not even dressing, while another is running at about 70%.  With Ed Davis as banged up as he was, it wasn't a secret to any one that Landesberg was going to be the best player on the court last night.  I love how you try to make us sound like some experienced team that should automatically win a national title.  I'll let you get back to verbally [enter inappropriate progressive verb here] the likes of John Wall while we re-build an NCAA championship contending program.

hole -20

your post is the biggest crock of sh-t that i have ever heard on this site, if u dont pick it up , i am going to quit this site, ok goDUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH SAY IT ISN'T

OH SAY IT ISN'T SO....BC.....YOU MIGHT QUIT THE SITE?????

Won't Splinter?

What do you call what happened last night when a vet coach and 10 McDonalds's AA get taken to the wood shed...AT HOME.....by a new coach in the league , foreign to the EAST coast......with ZERO McDonald's on their roster ?

Perfect execution vs Total Dysfunction. Cry

RIGHT ON MAMBY!!!

that was a shedder, they were put thru, by a guy who just started coaching this yr. before that he was singer, ok, go duke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McDonald's All-Americans

Sylven Landesberg was a McDonald's All-American.  Come back when you know what you're talking about.

Landesberg

Bennett is clearly an excellent coach who is getting the most out of his team. But it is impossible to overestimate how much having a talent like Landesberg as a go-to guy makes a difference when the going gets rough.

Excellent point

Agree. The Heels, in particular need a guy just like this. Last year they had three, sometimes four options. The going is currently pretty rough and it won't get any easier.

NSD for football will come as a welcome diversion.

ditty!!

have u ever heard of a team playing defense???go duke!!
